Abstract

Abstract A device for the combustion of the burnable components of exhaust gases includes a conduit or tube for the passage of the exhaust gases and a heat pipe mounted within the conduit preferably at a spaced location from the interior walls in order to permit passage of the exhaust gases around the heat pipe and through the conduit. The device also includes means for directing an air supply into the exhaust conduit in order to aid in the combustion of exhaust gases under certain exhaust gas conditions. The heat pipe comprises a tubular zone closed on all sides and evacuated on the interior. A capillary fabric is arranged adjacent the inside face and the pipe is filled with a quantity of a volatile liquid, for example sodium or potassium. Such a pipe has a property of being capable of transferring heat with about 10 times the conductivity of copper. The practical construction is such that the temperature gradient over the entire length of the heat tube is substantially 0.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 94 words
A device for the combustion of the burnable components of an exhaust gas comprising an exhaust gas conduit through which the exhaust gases are passed, said conduit having a heat pipe portion therein comprising a tube having an evacuated portion extending along the length thereof with a capillary fabric therein and being filled with a quantity of volatile liquid to greatly increase the conductivity thereof; said heat pipe comprising a separate tube arranged within said exhaust conduit, means for mounting said tube within said conduit at a spaced location from the interior walls thereof.
Claim 2
Independent Claim 75 words
A device for the combustion of the burnable components of an exhaust gas comprising an exhaust gas conduit through which the exhaust gases are passed, said conduit having a heat pipe portion therein comprising a tube having an evacuated portion extending along the length thereof with a capillary fabric therein and being filled with a quantity of volatile liquid to greatly increase the conductivity thereof and means for supplying combustion air into said exhaust conduit.
Claim 3
Independent Claim 86 words
A device for the combustion of the burnable components of an exhaust gas comprising an exhaust gas conduit through which the exhaust gas are passed, said conduit having a heat pipe portion therein comprising a tube having an evacuated portion extending along the length thereof with a capillary fabric therein and being filled with a quantity of volatile liquid to greatly increase the conductivity thereof and a plurality of inlets connected into said exhaust conduit for exhaust gas and at least one inlet for combustion air.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 37 words
A device according to claim 1, wherein said heat pipe comprises a tubular member which is closed at each end and said evacuated portion is formed at the interior and extends from one end to the other.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 25 words
A device according to claim 1, wherein said heat pipe comprises a tube having a double wall construction, the space between the walls being evacuated.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 14 words
A device according to claim 1, wherein said heat pipe comprises said exhaust conduit.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 24 words
A device according to claim 2, wherein said mounting means comprises curved vanes to impart a twisting motion to the exhaust gases passing therethrough.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 27 words
A device according to claim 1, wherein said exhaust conduit is surrounded by an insulation at least in the area of the extension of said heat pipe.
