Abstract

Abstract A maser incorporating a crystal having F-centers. The crystal, which may be an alkali halide such as KI, exhibits dichroism and may be pumped by selective absorption with circularly polarized light energy. The light energy is preferably derived from a diode laser, such as gallium aluminum arsenide, and has a wavelength coinciding with a point on the band edge of the optical absorption band of the crystal. Both a resonant cavity and a traveling wave configuration are disclosed.
