Abstract

Abstract A hollow steel beam is formed of sheet metal by automated forming machines including a continuous welding operation. To provide sufficient material along the upper and lower surfaces of the beam, to develop the full potential strength of the beam in bending, reinforcing strips are welded to the upper and lower stringer sections of the beam in an automated machine operation.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 3
Claim 1
Independent Claim 163 words
A reinforced hollow beam formed from only three strips of sheet steel comprising, in combination, a first strip of sheet steel formed to define an elongated hollow beam having, in crosssection thereof, a continuous periphery of the same material thickness throughout and providing upper and lower sheet stringer sections That merge integrally at both of their longitudinal edges with generally upright sides connecting said upper stringer section to said lower stringer section, the other two strips of steel each having their longitudinal edges upset and offset to provide a U-shaped elongated reinforcing strip, each stringer section being reinforced by one of said two strips of steel to increase the modulus of the beam in resistance to bending, by having the longitudinal edges of an elongated reinforcing strip welded upon the outer side of the stringer adjacent both longitudinal edges of the stringer, and each said reinforcing strip having substantially the same length and width as the stringer to which the reinforcing strip attaches.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 163 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 75 words
A beam as in claim 1 wherein the width of the lower stringer section is greater than the width of the upper stringer section, and the thickness of the reinforcing strip that is welded to the upper stringer of the hollow beam being thicker than the reinforcing strip that is welded to the lower stringer so as to permit efficient development of desired stresses in the beam along both the upper and lower stringers thereof.
