Abstract A METHOD OF REGULATING THE GROWTH OF PLANTS IN AGRICULTURE AND HORTICULTURE IS DESCRIBED WHICH COMPRISES TREATING THE PLANTS, SEEDS OR THE MEDIUM IN WHICH THEY ARE GROWN WITH HYDROCARBON AND SUBSTITUTED HYDROCARBON PHOSPHONIC AND PHOSPHINIC ACIDS, AMIDES, ESTERS AND SALTS, AN ANALOGOUS THIO COMPOUNDS, PHOSPHINE OXIDES AND SULPHIDES, AND COMPOSITIONS CONTAINING THE SAME. BY SELECTING THE APPROPRIATE APPLICATION RATE AN INCREASE IN THE YIELD CAN BE OBTAINED, E.G. GRAIN YIELD OF CEREALS AND/OR AN INCREASE IN THE PROTEIN CONTENTOF THE PLANT. THE COMPOUNDS CAN BE APPLIED IN ADMIXTURE WITH A DILUENT, SURFACTANT, FERTILIZER OR WEEDKILLER.
