Abstract

Abstract A tufting looper mechanism including a looper element or hook, a spreader element fixed proximate to the bill of the hook for receiving a tufted loop thereover, in a spread position, and a knife member, and means for reciprocably moving the looper element and knife member so that the knife member moves between the hook and spreader element to cut a spread loop held by the hook and spreader element in substantially the center thereof to form cut pile yarn ends of equal height.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 4
Claim 1
Independent Claim 209 words
A tufting machine comprising: a. means supporting a base fabric, b. means for stitching a yarn through said base fabric to form a loop therein, c. a solid hook having a free end to enter said loop, a closed end, a cutting side, and an opposite side, d. said cutting side comprising a vertical planar cutting surface, e. means for relatively moving said loop upon said hook toward its closed end, f. an elongated spreader element of spring material having a fixed end, a free end and a middle portion, g. means fixing said fixed end to said hook adjacent said closed end so that said middle portion is laterally spaced from said planar cutting surface, and the free end of said spreader element is elastically biased against said cutting side adjacent the free end of said hook, so that the free ends of said hook and said spreader element will enter said loop substantially simultaneously, h. a knife member, i. means for relatively moving said knife member against the cutting surface of said hook and between said cutting surface and said spreader element to cut a loop thereon substantially in the center of the loop to form a cut pile tuft having yarn strands of substantially equal length.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 209 words

Claim 3
Dependent Claim 49 words
The invention according to claim 1 in which said hook and spreader element have bottom edges in substantially the same horizontal plane, the thickness of said solid hook being substantially equal to the distance between said cutting surface and the opposite side of said spreader element from said hook.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 30 words
The invention according to claim 1 in which said stitching means comprises a needle, means for reciprocably moving said needle through the fabric on said opposite side of said hook.
