Abstract
Abstract A miniaturized dictation machine has complete facilities for recording and reproducing sound from a magnetic disc record medium. The machine features absolute synchronized driving of an inserted disc record member and a sound head transducer to trace a helical signal path on the disc member, and a pressure pad structure that insures good sound head to disc contact. Other features include a compact, highly efficient sound head carrier design, and backspacing mechanisms.

A driving arrangement for a transducing unit accommodating a disc record member having a centrally oriented mounting aperture and an auxiliary aperture positioned radially from said centrally oriented aperture comprising: a sound head transducer means; disc mounting means mounting said disc record member during operation of said transducing unit; motive means selectively interconnected directly with said disc mounting means to impart rotational movement thereto; first driving means interconnecting said disc mounting means and said sound head transducer means in driving relation to impart a translational movement to said sound head transducer means with respect to said disc record member; means retaining said disc mounting means, said sound head transducer means, and said interconnecting driving means in a predetermined initial position in said dictation unit; second driving means operable to interconnect said motive means directly with said disc record member in order to rotate the same after insertion in said transducing unit; and means associated with said disc mounting means and operable in conjunction with said first driving means to establish a driving connection from said disc record member to said sound head transducer means, said associated means including a rotatable spindle member, said spindle member having a central pin element and an auxiliary pin element thereon located for respective engagement with said centrally oriented and said auxiliary apertures in said disc record member after said disc record member is inserted in said transducing unit to thereby achieve a positive synchronized drive of said disc record member and said sound head transducer means; locking means operable immediately following insertion of a disc record member to lock said spindle member and said central and auxiliary pin elements in a relatively stationary condition in said apparatus with respect to said disc record member said locking means being unlocked to permit movement of said spindle and said central and auxiliary pin elements by application of a predetermined force level to said locking means; means for activating said second driving means after insertion of said disc record member to thereby rotate said disc record member relative to said locked spindle member and said auxiliary pin element in order to move said auxiliary aperture in said disc record member around into alignment with and engagement with said auxiliary pin element; whereupon driving force imparted by said record member to said spindle member exceeds said predetermined force level and said locking means is thereupon unlocked to enable establishment of said driving connection from said disc record member to said sound head transducing means.
