Abstract

Abstract A stabilizing device for a loose tooth and a restoration for a tooth having a cavity left in the tooth by the breaking away of a relatively large portion of the tooth from the incisal and side wall surfaces thereof comprising a side wall forming plate inset in the cavity adjacent the base thereof and conforming to the normal side wall contour of the tooth portion that has broken away, a reinforcing mesh secured to the bottom of the side wall forming plate and extending inwardly forming a lining over at least a portion of the cavity, a load distributing anchor extending through the mesh and fastened to the tooth, and a dental filling of hardened plastic material filling the remainder of said cavity and shaped to conform to the normal contour of the natural tooth portion which it occupies.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 13
Claim 1
Independent Claim 165 words
In the art of dentistry, a restoration for a broken down tooth having a cavity left in the tooth by the breaking away of a relatively large portion of the tooth from the incisive and side wall surfaces thereof but having a substantial wall portion remaining intact, comprising a side wall forming imperforate veneer plate inset in the cavity conforming to the normal side wall contour of the tooth portion that has broken away and resting on the natural tooth adjacent the base of said cavity, a reinforcing mesh secured to the bottom of the side wall forming plate and extending inwardly forming a lining over at least a portion of the cavity, a load distributing anchoring means extending through said mesh and fastened to the tooth, and a dental filling of hardened plastic material distinct from the side wall forming veneer plate filling the remainder of said cavity and shaped to conform to the normal contour of the natural tooth portion which it occupies.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 165 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 35 words
The restoration set forth in claim 1 wherein said load distributing anchoring means comprises a spool having a bore through the axis thereof and a fastener extending through said bore and fastened to said tooth.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 34 words
The restoration set forth In claim 1 wherein said spool has flat circular end surfaces and a concave side wall surface adapting said spool to be firmly gripped by the harden-ed plastic filling material.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 18 words
The restoration set forth in claim 1 where in said anchoring means includes a mushroom shaped anchor device.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 46 words
The restoration set forth in claim 1 wherein said side wall forming plate extends to a plane spaced a short distance below the normal incisal surface of said natural tooth and the filling material is molded over the exposed edge of said side wall forming plate.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 91 words
A filling retaining device for a dental restoration comprising a side wall forming veneer plate of a stiff bendable imperforate material adapted to be cut to the size and bent to the shape of the side wall portion of the tooth which has been broken away from a natural tooth but leaving a substantial wall portion of the tooth intact and a reinforcing mesh secured adjacent the base of said side wall forming plate, said mesh having at least a main portion extending substantially perpendicular to said side wall forming plate.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 91 words
A filling retaining device for a dental restoration comprising a side wall forming veneer plate of a stiff bendable imperforate material adapted to be cut to the size and bent to the shape of the side wall portion of the tooth which has been broken away from a natural tooth but leaving a substantial wall portion of the tooth intact and a reinforcing mesh secured adjacent the base of said side wall forming plate, said mesh having at least a main portion extending substantially perpendicular to said side wall forming plate.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 52 words
The device set forth in claim 6 wherein said mesh includes in addition to the main portion a second portion joined to said main portion along a fold line and extending substantially parallel to said side wall forming plate, said mesh being secured to said side wall plate along said fold line.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 24 words
The device set forth in claim 6 wherein said mesh is secured to the base of said side wall forming plate by threaded fasteners.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 31 words
The device set forth in claim 6 wherein the base of said side wall forming plate is bent inwardly to form a shoulder on which said mesh rests and is secured.
Claim 12
Independent Claim 205 words
A method for restoration of a tooth having a large cavity left therein by the errosion or breaking away of a relatively large portion of the tooth from the incisal and side wall surfaces thereof but leaving a substantial side wall portion of the tooth intact comprising preparing the cavity by grinding away rough portions of the tooth and flattening the floor of the cavity, shaping a veneer plate to the contour of the side wall portion of said tooth which has broken away, securing a reinforcing mesh to said plate adjacent one inside edge thereof, installing said plate in said cavity with the reinforcing mesh extending inwardly over the floor of said cavity and with said plate forming a continuation of the normal side wall of said tooth, applying a load distributing anchor over said mesh within said cavity in overlying relation to said flattened floor, drawing said anchor and interposed mesh up tight against the floor of said cavity with fastening means secured to said anchor and extending into said tooth, and packing said cavity with a hardenable dental filling material distinct from the veneer plate so that said filling material surrounds said anchor and completely fills the cavity inwardly of said plate.
