Abstract NEW 11B-CHLORO-19-NORPREGN-4-ENE-3,20-DIONES AND 3,5DIENOL ESTER AND ESTER THEREOF SHOW PROGESTERONE-LIKE ACTIVITY SUPERIOR TO THAT OF PREVIOUSLY KNOWN AND CLOSELY RELATED SUBSTANCES. METHODS FOR THEIR PEPARATION INCLUDE INTER ALIA THE CHLORINATION OF CORRESPONDING 11A-HYDROXY STEROIDS AND THE INTRODUCTION OF DESIRED SUBSTITUENTS INTO ALREADY 11B-CHLORINATED STEROIDS. THE COMPOUNDS ARE OF USE IN HUMAN AND VETERINARY MEDICINE AS CONTRACEPTIVES AND ALSO IN CLINICAL CONDITIONS, E.G. DYSMENORRHOEA.
