Abstract
Abstract TO REDUCE OR PREVENT SCALING DURING DISTILLATION, BARIUM CARBONATE AND SMALL, CATALYTIC AMOUNTS OF CO2 ARE ADDED TO SEA WATER TO FORM BARIUM BICARBONATE IN SITU WHICH RAPIDLY REACTS WITH SULFATE AND CALCIUM, AND FORMS PRECIPITATE CONSISTING ESSENTIALLY OF BARIUM SULFATE AND CALCIUMN CARBONATE. THE SOFTENED WATER CAN THEN BE HEATED TO PRECIPITATE OUT MAGNESIUM HYDROXIDE.
