Abstract

Abstract In a semi-automatic sequence, paper sheets from a horizontal supply on top of the apparatus are manually advanced to a poweroperated feed mechanism where each sheet is fed downwardly between a pair of vertical guides. While between these guides, the leading edge of each sheet engages a sensing switch to activate time delay means. The sheet continues to be fed between tucker or folder elements until a proper length of paper corresponding to the pre-established fold length has been fed past the tuckers. The time delay period is now terminated. Feeding of the sheet is interrupted and the vertical sheet is held by light tension at the start of the folding cycle. The automatic folding sequence continues until the trailing edge of the paper disengages the sensing switch, whereupon the tuckers cease to operate and resume a normal neutral position and the feed mechanism again becomes active for feeding the next sheet. The folded sheet drops onto a storage tray at the bottom of the apparatus for manual removal periodically.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 199 words
A method of folding sheets of paper and the like comprising positively feeding individual sheets into a substantially vertical guide passage and frictionally engaging each sheet in the guide passage and discontinuing the positive feeding so that each sheet is substantially free-hanging under light frictional retarding, engaging one side of the hanging sheet with a first tucker blade and pushing the sheet into a first gripper to thereby form a first transverse fold in the sheet, the first gripper then holding the sheet at the first fold, causing the first tucker blade to disengage the sheet held by the first gripper and then engaging the other side of the sheet with a second tucker blade and pushing the sheet into a second gripper while simultaneously drawing the sheet downwardly and overcoming the frictional retarding of the sheet and thereby forming a second transverse fold in the sheet, the movement of the second tucker blade into the second gripper withdrawing the first fold from the first gripper, and then causing the second tucker blade to disengage the sheet held by the second gripper and then repeating the method steps until the folding of the sheet is completed throughout its length.
