Claim 1
Independent Claim
167 words
A device for testing the strength of a joint of a portion of a lEngth of wire joined to a part, which comprises: means for holding the part with a length of wire having a portion thereon joined to the part; means for supporting a section of the length of wire extending from the joint; a carriage movable longitudinally in a path of travel transversely of the wire; means mounted pivotally on the carriage for engaging the section of the length of wire extending between the supporting means and the joint between the wire and the part to test the strength of the joint of the wire and the part; and means for causing pivotal movement of the engaging means transversely of the longitudinal path of travel thereof so that when the carriage is moved longitudinally transversely of the wire the engaging means is caused to exert a pulling force against the wire of sufficient magnitude to test the strength of the joint and break the wire.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
96 words
A device for testing the strength of a joint of a portion of a length of wire joined to a part as set forth in claim 1, wherein: the engaging means is pivotable into a retracted position away from the axis of the wire as the carriage is extended transversely beyond the length of wire extending from the joint, and the engaging means is pivotable into an extended position so as to project transversely of the axis of the wire to engage the wire and test the strength of the joint as the carriage is retracted.
Claim 4
Independent Claim
299 words
A device for testing the strength of a joint of a portion of a length of wire joined to a part, which comprises: means for holding the part with a length of wire having a portion thereon joined to the part; means for supporting a section of the length of wire extending from the joint; a carriage movable longitudinally in a path of travel transversely of the wire; means mounted pivotally on the carriage for engaging the section of the length of wire extending between the supporting means and the joint between the wire and the part to test the strength of the joint of the wire and the part; and bonding means mounted on the carriage for establishing a bond between the wire and the part; the engaging means capable of being pivoted into a retracted position away from the axis of the wire as the carriage is extended transversely beyond the length of wire extending from the joint, and further the engaging means being made of a magnetic material and capable of being pivoted into an extended position so as to project transversely of the axis of the wire to engage the wire and test the strength of the joint as the carriage is retracted; the bonding means generating a magnetic field during the establishment of a bond between the wire and the part which attracts the engaging means and causes the engaging means to be pivoted into an extended position so as to project transversely of the axis of the wire so that when the carriage is moved longitudinally transversely of the wire the engaging means is caused to engage the wire and to exert a pulling force against the wire of sufficient magnitude to test the strength of the joint as the carriage is retracted.
Claim 5
Claim 6
Independent Claim
228 words
A device for testing the strength of a joint of a portion of a length of wire joined to a part, which comprises: means for holding the part with a length of wire having a portion thereof joined to the part; means for supporting a section of the length of wire extending from the joint; a test pawl; a carriage having the test pawl mounted thereon; means for mounting the carriage to move the test pawl longitudinally and transversely of the length of wire between the joint and the end of the wire; means for advancing the carriage in a path of travel transversely of the length of wire and for then retracting the carriage; means mounting the test pawl on the carriage for pivotable movement into a retracted position away from the axis of the wire as the carriage is advanced transversely beyond the length of the wire extending from the joint and for pivotable movement into an extended position to project transversely of the axis of the wire to engage the wire and test the strength of the joint as the carriage is retracted; and means operated subsequent to the carriage being advanced transversely beyond the length of the wire for establishing a magnetic field about the joint to attract magnetically the pawl into an extended position which projects transversely of the length of the wire.
