Abstract

Abstract An absorbent fabric, preferably used as a diaper, comprised of an absorbent shrinkable web encased in a warp knitted fabric of relatively non-shrinkable yarn. The fabric is substantially nonstretchable when made, but becomes stretchable after washing and drying. A method of making a stretchable fabric is also disclosed.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 16
Claim 1
Independent Claim 61 words
An absorbent stretchable diaper comprising a layer of a hydrophilic material, at least one layer of a hydrophobic material, and substantially non-shrinkable yarn, the hydrophilic and hydrophobic layers being maintained in contact with each other by a series of interconnected loop chains of the yarn knitted through the layers to encase the layers in a warp knitted fabric of the yarn.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 61 words
An absorbent stretchable diaper comprising a layer of a hydrophilic material, at least one layer of a hydrophobic material, and substantially non-shrinkable yarn, the hydrophilic and hydrophobic layers being maintained in contact with each other by a series of interconnected loop chains of the yarn knitted through the layers to encase the layers in a warp knitted fabric of the yarn.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 22 words
An absorbent diaper as defined in claim 1 wherein the fabric has a border therearound to enclose the edges of the fabric.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 15 words
An absorbent diaper as defined in claim 2 wherein the border is a hydrophobic material.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 13 words
An absorbent diaper as defined in claim 1 wherein the yarn is hydrophobic.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 13 words
An absorbent diaper as defined in claim 4 wherein the yarn is nylon.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 14 words
An absorbent diaper as defined in claim 4 wherein the yarn is a polyester.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 14 words
An absorbent diaper as defined in claim 4 wherein the yarn is an acrylic.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 21 words
An absorbent diaper as defined in claim 1 wherein the hydrophilic layer is smaller in surface area than the hydrophobic layer.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 16 words
An absorbent diaper as defined in claim 1 wherein the hydrophobic material is a non-woven fabric.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 17 words
An absorbent diaper as defined in claim 1 wherein the hydrophilic material is a web of rayon.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 18 words
An absorbent diaper as defined in claim 10 wherein the hydrophilic material contains at least 1% polyvinylchloride fibers.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 14 words
An absorbent diaper as defined in claim 1 wherein the hydrophobic material is nylon.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 15 words
An absorbent diaper as defined in claim 1 wherein the hydrophobic material is a polyester.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 15 words
An absorbent diaper as defined in claim 1 wherein the hydrophobic material is an acrylic.
Claim 16
Dependent Claim 31 words
An absorbent diaper as defined in claim 1 wherein the hydrophilic layer and the yarn have the characteristics that the hydrophilic layer will shrink at least 10% more than the yarn.
