Abstract
Abstract An illustrative embodiment of the invention shows a technique for accurately observing relative changes in strip thickness during sheet metal rolling operations. This is accomplished by measuring the apparent attenuations of two collimated beams of radiation. The prime radiation beam and the scanning beam, for instance, are tilted in opposite directions relative to the plane of the longitudinally moving metal strip in order to provide clearance for the radiation sources and associated detectors during traverse across the strip width. These tilted beams enable the relative change in strip thickness to be measured at essentially the same longitudinal position.
