Abstract

Abstract Water-cooled, panel-constructed tapered hood over mouth of steel furnace leads to water-cooled, panel-constructed stack having approximately parabolic vertical cross-section to increase velocity and velocity pressure of off-gas and to reduce static pressure of off-gas and maintain such static pressure at a negative value throughout stack. Off-gas will not lead out between panel joints. Same effect may be achieved by inserting orifice plate in bottom of conventional stack. Inner wall of hood and stack lined with ceramic to reduce cooling water requirement, only enough cooling water being required to prevent ceramic from melting, cooling of off-gases more economically being handled in gas cleaning system.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 180 words
Apparatus for collecting gases produced in a furnace having a mouth and for conducting said collected gases to a gas cleaning system, said apparatus comprising: a. a hood having an inlet opening and an outlet opening, said hood being adapted to be positioned over said furnace with the inlet opening of said hood adjacent the mouth of said furnace, b. the area of the inlet opening of said hood being larger than the area of the outlet opening of said hood, c. a vertical conduit having a lower end and an upper end, the lower end of said vertical conduit communicating with the outlet opening of said hood, d. said vertical conduit having a cross-section proportioned to maintain a negative static pressure in the collected gases flowing therethrough throughout the entire length of the said vertical conduit, e. the vertical cross-section of said vertical conduit converging throughout the entire length of the said vertical conduit in an upward direction, f. conduit means communicating with the upper end of said vertical conduit and adapted to communicate with said gas cleaning system.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 180 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 17 words
Apparatus as in claim 1, wherein: f. the vertical cross-section of said vertical conduit is approximately parabolic.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 107 words
Apparatus as in claim 2, wherein: f. the horizontal cross-sectional area of said vertical conduit at any point above its base is determined by the following formula: A A1 Square Root h1/h in which: A is the cross-sectional area of said of the cOnduit at any point above the base of said conduit, A1 is the cross-sectional area of said vertical conduit at the base of said conduit, h is the elevation of the point at which A is to be determined above the bottom of the said hood, h1 is the elevation of the base of said vertical conduit above the bottom of the said hood.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 111 words
Apparatus as in claim 1, wherein: f. said vertical conduit has a circular horizontal cross-section, the diameter of said vertical conduit at any point above its base being determined by the following formula: D D1 Cube Root h1/h in which: D is the diameter of said vertical conduit at any point above the base of the said conduit, D1 is the diameter of said vertical conduit at the base of the said conduit, h is the elevation of the point at which D is to be determined above the bottom of the said hood, h1 is the elevation of the base of said vertical conduit above the bottom of said hood.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 36 words
Apparatus as in claim 1, further comprising: f. said conduit means being substantially horizontal adjacent said vertical conduit, g. relief cap means in said conduit means laterally offset from the longitudinal axis of said vertical conduit.
