Abstract
Abstract Aqueous emulsion polymerization of acryloxyalkyl alkoxysilane, alkyl acrylic esters, and optionally other vinyl monomers produces copolymers curable at low temperatures. The silane may be introduced to the polymerization after a portion of the other monomers are polymerized. Heat curing improves the solvent resistance of cured as-cast films of the latex. Silanol curing catalysts enhance the cure rate. Paper coatings are comparison tested for wet and dry tensile. Exemplary is a latex of a polymer of 40.7 percent 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, 18.5 percent vinylidene chloride, 37.6 percent vinyl chloride and 3.2 percent gammamethacryloxypropyl trimethoxysilane.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 8
Claim 1
Independent Claim
17 words
A process of claim 1 wherein the alkyl acrylate is 2-ethylhexyl acrylate and (C) is vinylidene chloride.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
31 words
A process of claim 1 wherein an emulsifying agent is used in a level to about 10 parts per 100 parts of monomer and the pH is about 6 to 7.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
69 words
A process of claim 3 wherein about 10 percent of the total acrylic ester monomer (A) and about 80 percent of the total copolymerizable monomer (C) are first polymerized to a level of from about 15 percent to about 80 percent conversion based on the amount of monomers charged before charging the acryloxyalkylalkoxy silane monomer and the remainder of the acrylic ester and copolymerizable monomer to the polymerization reactor.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
34 words
A process of claim 4 wherein the emulsifying agent is an anionic emulsifier used in the level from about 3 to about 6 parts by weight based on 100 parts by weight of monomer.
