Abstract
Abstract Synthetic detergents are prepared having improved cleaning power using polyacrylic acid salts. For example, sodium polyacrylate of controlled molecular weight is an excellent substitute for the ''''suspect'''' phosphate builder-sequestrant presently used in household detergent compositions. Regardless of the merit of the charge that detergent phosphates are the primary cause of eutrophication in our lakes and rivers, the search for phosphatefree detergents intensifies daily. The polyacrylates described herein provide a very effective and attractive answer to the controversy.
