Abstract A METHOD AND APPARATUS ARE DISCLOSED FOR SEPARATING THE UNLIKE COMPONENTS OF A FLUID MIXTURE OF UNLIKE MATERIALS BY CONTACTING THE MIXTURE WITH SURFACE MEANS, PROVIDING RELATIVE MOTION BETWEEN THE MIXTURE AND THE SURFACE MEANS, WHICH MOTION EXERTS A FORCE ON THE MIXTURE PARALLEL TO THE SURFACE MEANS, THUS FORMING LAYERS OR ZONES HAVING A REDUCED CONCENTRATION OF AT LEAST ONE MATERIAL COMPONENT OF THE FLUID MIXTURE. AT LEAST A PART OF ONE SUCH LAYER OR ZONE IS THEREAFTER REMOVED FROM THE MIXTURE.
