Abstract PROCESS FOR PRESERVING STONE OBJECTS MADE OF LIMESTONE, SANDSTONE, OR THE LIKE AND CONTAINING AT LEAST 5 PERCENT BY WEIGHT OF CACO3. COMPRISES CONTACTING THE STONE WITH AN AQUEOUS SOLUTION OF A BARIUM OR STRONTIUM SALT OF A MONOESTER OF SULFURIC ACID AND THEN HYDROLYZING AT A PH NOT LESS THAN ABOUT 7, SO AS TO PRECIPITATE BARIUM OR STRONTIUM SULFATE IN A SLOW, CONTROLLED MANNER AND THEREBY EFFECT CONSOLIDATION OF THE STONE.
