Abstract A LOW DENSITY STOICHIOMETRIC AGGLOMERATED FURNACE CHARGE FOR USE IN THE CARBOTHERMIC REDUCTION OF SILLICA IN ELECTRIC TYPE FURNACES ACCORDING TO THE OVERALL REACTION OF SIO2+2C$SIL+2CO. THE CHARGE COMPRISES A FINE FRACTION AND A COARSE FRACTION OF PARTICULATED SILICA HOMOGENOUSLY MIXED WITH A PARTICULATED CARBON AND A LOW DENSITY FILLER TO PROVIDE AN OVERALL AVERAGE BULK DENSITY OF BETWEEN ABOUT 20 AND 50 POUNDS PER CUBIC FOOT.
