Abstract VARNISHES OR RESOLE RESINS IN LARGELY NON-AQUEOUS ORGANIC SOLVENTS, ESPECIALLY LOWER ALKANOLS, PRODUCED BY FIRST MAKING A RESOLE UNDER BASIC AQUEOUS CONDITIONS FROM FORMALDEHYDE AND A PHENOL WHICH HAS BEEN PREVIOUSLY REACTED UNDER FRIEDEL CRAFTS CONDITIONS WITH A SPECIFIC MIXTURE OF DICYCLOPENTADIENE, CYCLOPENTADIENE/ACYCLIC CONJUGATED DIENE CODIMERS. AND CONJUGATED DIENES AND THEREAFTER DISSOLVING SUCH RESOLE IN SUCH ORGANIC SOLVENT. THESE VARNISHES ARE USEFUL IN IMPREGNATING SHEETS AND IN MAKING LAMINATES THEREFROM.
