Abstract

Abstract Apparatus for continuously casting solid round castings suitable for direct drawing into tubes comprises a rotating bottomless mold, means for pouring molten metal into said mold at a point eccentric to the axis of the mold, and means for continuously withdrawing the casting from the bottom of the mold. Means are provided for vertically reciprocating the mold as it rotates.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 105 words
Apparatus for the continuous casting of solid cylindrical metallic objects, said apparatus comprising a cylindrical mold having its main axis vertically positioned, and being mounted for rotation about said main axis, means for cooling said mold, a motor connected to rotate said mold, means for directionally introducing a jet of molten metal into the upper portion of said mold, at a point eccentric to said axis, and in a direction transverse to a radius thereof, means for downwardly withdrawing the casting formed in said mold in a direction coaxial with said mold, and means for simultaneously and vertically reciprocating both said motor and said mold.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 105 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 17 words
Apparatus according to claim 1 comprising means for cooling the workpiece as it emerges from said mold.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 60 words
Apparatus as claimed in claim 1 in which said casting withdrawing means comprises an annular support beneath and in vertical alignment with said mold, power-actuated rollers carried by said annular support and positioned to bear against opposite sides of said casting after it leaves said mold, and means for rotating said annular support at the same speed as said mold.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 50 words
Apparatus as claimed in claim 1 in which said jet introducing means is positioned to cause the molten metal in said jet to strike the metal in said mold at a point located within the outer third of the radius of said mold, but spaced inwardly from the wall thereof.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 29 words
Apparatus as claimed in claim 1 in which said jet introducing means is positioned to introduce said jet in a direction substantially perpendicular to a radius of said Mold.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 26 words
Apparatus as claimed in claim 1 comprising vertically acting reciprocating means for moving said mold more rapidly in an upward direction than in a downward direction.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 129 words
Apparatus for the continuous casting of solid cylindrical metallic objects, said apparatus comprising a cylindrical mold having its main axis vertically positioned, and being mounted for rotation about said main axis, means for cooling said mold, means for directionally introducing a jet of molten metal into the upper portion of said mold, at a point eccentric to said axis, in a direction having a horizontal component transverse to a radius thereof and at a speed different from the tangential speed of the mold at said point, means for rotating said mold at a speed slow enough to permit said molten metal to form therein a tranversely continuous substantially uniform solid casting, and means for downwardly withdrawing the casting formed in said mold in a direction coaxial with said mold.
