Abstract

Abstract A collapsible ladder device comprising a plurality of series connected hinged members extendible to a linear condition and foldable to a collapsed condition. The plurality of members include first and second end members and a plurality of intermediate members with respective lengths allowing the device to be folded to a spiral rectangular form in its collapsed condition with the first end member located within the spiral and a second end member at the outer end of the spiral. Each member comprises a pair of displaced elongated elements substantially parallel to each other providing first and second sides of the device and a plurality of rung means connected between and securing together the first and second sides providing the steps for the device. Securing means comprising elongated flexible bands with first and second ends secured respectively with the first and second members when the device in its extended condition extends along the rear side of the elements for maintaining the device in its linear condition.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 7
Claim 1
Independent Claim 302 words
A collapsible ladder device comprising a plurality of series connected hinged members extendible to a linear condition and foldable to a collapsed condition, said plurality of members including first and second end members and a plurality of intermediate members with respective lengths allowing the device to be folded in spiral form To its collapsed condition with the first end member located within the spiral and the second end member at the outer end of the spiral, said device in its collapsed condition having a rectangular form and every member being parallel to every other member evenly displaced from it in said series of members, a securing means for preventing said device from assuming its collapsed condition comprising a pair of elongated flexible bands each having first and second ends detachably secured with the first and second members when the device is in its extended condition and each extending along the rear side of a respective one of said elements for opposing the collapse of and maintaining said device in its linear condition for use, and tensioning means comprising a plurality of rods each having a first end pivotally secured with a said member at spaced positions intermediate said first and second end members and a second end movably receiving therethrough one of said bands, said tensioning means spacing said bands away from the rear side of said elements of said members when pivoted from its retracted position to extend normal to its said member for tensioning said band and maintaining said device in its extended condition, whereby the device may be collapsed by pivoting the rods to positions close to the members for removing tension from the bands, detaching the ends of the bands from the end members and pivoting the members to provide the spiral rectangular form for the ladder device.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 302 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 69 words
The device of claim 1 in which each member comprises a pair of displaced elongated elements substantially parallel to each other providing first and second sides of said device and each end having opposite ends hingedly connected with the respective proximate ends of the adjacent members and including a plurality of rung means connected between and securing together the first and second sides providing the steps for said device.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 79 words
The device of claim 2 in which each of said elements has a front side and a rear side and each pair of hinged members is pivotable between a first terminal position in linear alignment with each other and a second terminal position in which said pairs of members are perpendicular to each other, the front sides of the elements of each pair of hinged members moving toward each other when moving from their first to second terminal positions.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 42 words
The device of claim 3 in which the elements of said members are U-shaped in cross-section and each have opposite male and female pivotal ends for interconnecting with elements of adjacent members, said pivotal ends providing said first and second terminal positions.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 59 words
The device of claim 4 including a plurality of U-shaped reinforcing brackets received about said elements at predetermined locations for supporting said rods, said rungs being provided with U-shaped ends for being secured to elements of said members at opposite sides of said device with an intermediate connecting strip of triangular cross-section for providing the steps of the device.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 28 words
The device of claim 1 in which said band is provided with a plurality of stop elements along its length for engaging respective second ends of said rods.
