Abstract

Abstract An extrusion press primarily adapted for the handling of light metal. The press comprises a heated receptacle for blanks, same being mounted for movement in a direction parallel to the direction of extrusion, together with a hollow shaft onto which the receptacle moves during extrusion operation. The extrusion die is placed at the end of the shaft toward the receptacle so that the movement above mentioned drives the extrudable material within the receptacle through the die and exits same through the hollow shaft. A double acting pressure cylinder and piston actuates a piston rod which bears against the receptacle for effecting said movement thereof. A quick acting connector is provided for connecting the piston rod to the receptacle for retracting same to the initial position after the completion of an extrusion operation. Further retraction of only the piston rod then provides sufficient space between the end of said piston rod and the end of said receptacle to guide a cut off knife therebetween for shearing residue from the die.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim 260 words
In an extrusion press for the manufacture of light metal profiles, the combination comprising: a stationary hollow shaft; tool means mounted on one end of said hollow shaft and providing communication to the interior of said stationary hollow shaft; container means having means therein defining an elongated chamber for receiving a light metal block, said container means including means for supporting said container means for movement in a longitudinal direction, said chamber means being axially aligned with said stationary hollow shaft and movable into telescoping relationship with said stationary hollow shaft; reciprocal drive means axially aligned with said chamber means and initially axially spaced therefrom, said drive means, when driven in a first direction, being engageable with said light metal block for driving said light metal block into said chamber means, said drive means being further capable of engaging said container means, when driven in said first direction, and pushing same simultaneously with said light metal block into engagement with said tool means and said telescoping relationship with said stationary hollow shaft to thereby effect an extrusion of said light metal bloCk by said tool means into said interior of said stationary hollow shaft; and releasable connection means for releasably connecting said reciprocating drive means to said container means, said drive means, when driven in a second direction, driving said container means out of telescoping relationship with said hollow shaft at the completion of said extrusion operation, said releasable connection means being released to permit a movement of said drive means relative to said container means to said initial position.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 260 words

Claim 3
Dependent Claim 21 words
The combination according to claim 1, wherein said drive means comprises a pressure applying member engageable with said light metal block.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 15 words
The combination according to claim 1, wherein said releasable connection means is a bayonet lock.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 87 words
The combination according to claim 2, wherein said releasable connecting means comprises means defining a clearance between said pressure applying member and said container means when said drive means is driven in said second direction; and wherein said hollow shaft and said tool means have a combined length equal to the length of said chamber means; and including reciprocal knife means mounted for movement into said clearance for removing the residue from said tool means when said hollow shaft is in telescoping relationship with said chamber means.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 70 words
The combination according to claim 4, wherein said means defining said clearance comprises a stop including an annular ring member having a plurality of spaced notches therein, said ring member being connected to said container means but axially spaced therefrom and including a locking disk connected to said drive means and having a plurality of lugs thereon, said lugs being alignable with said notches for locking and unlocking said connection.
