Total Claims: 5
Claim 1
Independent Claim
139 words
An apparatus for use in the drawing of thermoplastic filaments comprising a heat treating tube having an upper elongated cylindrical chamber and a lower elongated conical chamber, said upper chamber having a yarn inlet formed at its upper extremity, said lower chamber having a yarn exit formed adjacent its lower extremity, said inlet being of a substantially greater diameter than said exit, said upper chamber being further characterized by a lateral gas opening formed in its side adjacent said yarn inlet and offset from the center thereof, whereby hot gas introduced through said opening strikes said filaments tangentially relative to their path of travel to create a high temperature fluid vortex around and along said filaments, whereby heat transfer to said filaments is substantially increased to thereby allow higher draw ratios to be obtained, resulting in high tenacity filaments.
Claim 2
Independent Claim

Claim 3
Dependent Claim
195 words
A heat transfer device for use in the drawing of thermoplastic filamentary yarns comprising a heat treating tube having an upper, elongated cylindrical chamber and a lower elongated conical chamber disposed immediately adjacent to and in fluid communication with said upper chamber, said upper chamber having a yarn inlet formed centrally of its upper extremity to permit entry of said yarn into said treating tube, said lower chamber having a yarn exit formed centrally of and adjacent to its lower end to permit exit of said yarn from said treating tube, said inlet being substantially greater in diameter than said exit, said upper chamber being further characterized by a lateral opening formed adjacent the top thereof and offset from the center thereof, whereby hot gases introduced through said opening strike said yarn tangentially relative to their path of travel and create a cyclonic-like flow around and along said yarn, said lower chamber having a laterally disposed exhaust opening formed adjacent the bottom end thereof to permit partial exhaust of said gases, whereby heat transfer to said filaments is substantially increased to thereby allow higher draw ratios to be obtained, resulting in filaments of high tenacity.
Claim 4
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
39 words
The device as set forth in claim 2 and further characterized by a spherically-shaped condensate reservior formed adjacent the lower extremity of said lower chamber and communicating with said exhaust opening, whereby condensing heat transfer mediums are efficiently removed.
