Abstract
Abstract IN THE PROCESS OF PRODUCING CHLORINE AND CAUSTIC FROM CHLORINE CELLS HAVING MERCURY CATHODES, LIQUID EFFLUENT STREAMS UNAVOIDABLY CONTAIN MINOR AMOUNTS OF MERCURY. THE MERCURY IN THESE EFFLUENT STREAMS IS RECOVERED IN A SIMPLIFIED PROCESS BY SOLUBILIZING IT IN A HYPOCHLORITE SOLUTION AND REDUCING THE DISSOLVED MERCURY TO ELEMENTAL MERCURY IN THE CHLORINE CELL.
