Abstract

Abstract An automatic profile grinding machine with indexing mechanism especially for contour grinding of relatively small parts such as tool inserts, comprised of a grinding wheel, work stations arranged around said grinding wheel, universal work feeding mechanism associated with each work station, individual cam mechanisms for each work station to index the grinding steps, electric and fluid pressure control mechanisms to control operation of the machine, work measuring mechanism and adjusting mechanism associated with the measuring mechanism to compensate for wear or out of balance condition of the grinding wheel.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 7
Claim 1
Independent Claim 140 words
In combination with an automatic grinding machine for polygonal workpieces, a template comprising a master cam of a shape corresponding with the shape of the workpieCe to be ground, said master cam being rotatable through 360*in intermittent steps corresponding to the number of sides of said master cam, rollers positioned at the apexes between the sides of said master cam, a cam follower plate adapted to be moved into and out of engagement with said master cam, said cam follower plate being supported on a reciprocable shaft having a link connection with with a reciprocable fluid power means adapted to move said cam follower plate into and out of engagement with said master cam and further adapted to position said polygonal workpiece for grinding in correspondence to the position of said master cam in relation to said cam follower plate.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 140 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 60 words
In the combination defined in claim 1, said master cam being provided with a circular index plate having notches spaced around its circumference corresponding in number to the number of sides of said master cam, and a control switch having a contact roller adapted to be engaged by said notches upon rotation of said master cam to trigger said switch.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 52 words
The combination defined in claim 1, further comprising first and second reduction gear means drivingly connected to said master cam and to the work spindle for said polygonal workpieces, and controlled clutch means to disconnect said first reduction gear means from said second reduction gear means upon rotation of said master cam.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 82 words
In the combination defined in claim 1, said fluid power means comprising a double acting piston having a first piston rod connected to said link and a second piston rod coaxial with said first piston rod connected to the end of a lever, the other end of said lever being connected to a manual micro scale adjustment means, and a pivot link pivotally supporting said lever intermediate its ends to allow pivotal repositioning of said lever relative to said second piston rod.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 56 words
In the combination defined in claim 4, said manual micro scale adjustment means comprising a calibrated hand wheel in connection with a screw connected to said lever, a gear connected to said screw adapted to mesh with a geared piston freely reciprocable between adjustable opposed limit stops to thus limit the adjusting range of said lever.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 41 words
In conjunction with the combination defined in claim 5, power actuated adjusting means to adjust one of said limit stops in response to a signal received from a gaging means for said workpieces forming an inherent part of said machine tool.
