Abstract

Abstract A quick change head for article addressing machines to facilitate changeover from one type label form to another. The head, which uses uncut label form material, includes a transfer wheel for transferring labels or information therefrom to the articles being addressed, a feeder pair cooperable with the form margins to advance the form, a trim knife pair to remove the form margins, a quillotine knife to divide the form into strips several labels long, and a combination strip feeder and knife mechanism to cut the strips into individual labels while feeding the labels to the transfer wheel. To accommodate different types and sizes of label forms, the form feeders and trim knifes are arranged for adjusting movement relative one another, and to facilitate quick yet accurate positioning of these elements, gaging means are provided for each. A quick change gear mechanism using preselected ratios permits the necessary speed change to be readily made in the form feeding and cutting components while a stroke gaging device is provided to enable the stroke of the strip feeder and knife mechanism to be accurately and quickly reset when changing from one form to another. To accommodate marginless type label forms, a conversion belt is provided bearing single row form feeder pins and foldable upon itself in an endless loop in driving engagement with the form feeder pair so that the form feeder pair are converted to a single feeder.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 7
Claim 1
Independent Claim 205 words
In an apparatus to quickly convert the labeling head of an article addressing machine from use with a label form of the type having perforated side margins reserved for form feeding purposes to use with a marginless type label form having feeding perforations in the label form proper, the labeling head including a feeder pin pair cooperable with the side margin perforations of said first mentioned label form type to feed said first mentioned label form type to said labeling head, the combination of: a flexible strip-like part adapted to be at least partially overlapped upon itself to form a closed loop; said flexible part supporting a row-like series of form feeder pins adapted for driving engagement with the feeding perforations in said marginless label form, said flexible part having at least one loop retaining aperture therethrough adapted, on overlapping of said flexible part, to receive at least the leading one of said row of form feeder pins therethrough whereby to maintain said flexible part in a looped condition, said flexible part having at least one row of feeding perforations spaced on each side of said feeder pin row to enable said flexible part to be drivingly coupled with said labeling head feeder pin pair.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 205 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 36 words
The apparatus according to claim 1 in which the effective operating length of said feeder pin row on said flexible part is at least equal to the operating circumference of said labeling head feeder pin pair.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 80 words
The apparatus according to claim 2 in which the length of said flexible part is substantially greater than the effective operating length of said feeder pin row so that on looping of said flexible part upon itself, said flexible part overlays substantially all of said feeder pins, said flexible part having plural loop retaining apertures therethrough to enable the overlapped ones of said feeder pins to pass therethrough whereby to assure sustained disposition of said flexible part in looped condition.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 46 words
The apparatus according to claim 1 including holddown means adapted to overlay said flexible part adjacent the point of driving engagement between said flexible part feeder pins and said marginless form whereby to prevent unwarranted disengagement of said marginless form with said flexible part feeder pins.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 216 words
A pin belt for use in converting a labeling head having dual pin type form feeders adapted to feed multi-row label form to North/South label strip, said North/South label strip having a single row of feeding perforations spaced at intervals along substantially the centerline thereof, comprising: a length of flexible material; a series of feeder pins supported on said material in a single row extending from a point adjacent one end of said material toward the other end thereof, said feeder pins being spaced at intervals corresponding to the spacing between said North/South strip feeder perforations, said material other end extending beyond the last of said feeder pins to provide an overlap portion enabling said material to be disposed upon itself in the form of a closed loop, said material other end having apertures therethrough spaced apart from said last feeder pin and from each other at substantially the same interval and along substantially the same axis as said feeder pins whereby to accommodate a like number of said feeder pins starting at said one end on overlapping of said material into a closed loop, said material having a row of feeding perforations spaced on each side of said feeder pin row to permit said material to be drivingly coupled with said labeling head form feeders.
