Abstract Power-driven warehouse equipment facilitates accurate and rapid selection of articles of commerce for distribution to warehouse outlets. A mobile track-mounted order-selection vehicle under the control of a warehouseman moves along an aisle formed by storage racks arranged in rows. Each rack is divided into compartments or slots, each slot containing cases, cartons or containers of a designated article of commerce. As the vehicle moves along the slots, selection of type and quantity of containers is made in accordance with a predetermined program carried by the driver of the vehicle in accordance with order picking instructions displayed for him by a display unit on the vehicle. Following selection of the requisite type and quantity of containers, each container is automatically labeled with a label which indicates the type, quantity and destination information imprinted thereon according to a program, and the containers are mechanically transported to an area where they are automatically diverted to accomplish assembly of orders in accordance with their proper destination.
In a warehousing system including a main storage area and an auxiliary storage area, the combination comprising: an elongated main storage rack in the main storage area comprising a fixed framework having open front and back sides formed by longitudinally extending vertically spaced stringers and defining compartments proportioned to accommodate individual articles in single file end-to-end array; conveyor means extending transversely between front and back sides, the end of the conveyor means supported on the front side being at a level lower than the end of the conveyor means supported on the back side so that the conveyor means lies inclined downwardly toward the front side; an elongated auxiliary storage rack in the auxiliary storage area spaced from the back side of the main storage rack, the auxiliary rack including a plurality of compartments defining slots which are open front and back and are proportioned to receive pallet loads of articles, means including a floor defining an unobstructed passageway between the open front side of said auxiliary rack and the open back side of said main rack, whereby a warehouseman working in the passageway between said main and auxiliary storage racks may remove articles from a pallet load on the auxiliary storage rack and deposit them in desired end-to-end array in the main storage rack, and means defining an unobstructed passageway on the back side of said auxiliary rack providing access to said rack for replenishing it, said main and auxiliary storage racks being arranged in vertically stacked tiers with the passageway formed between the back side of each main storage rack and the front side of each auxiliary storage rack being provided with a plurality of vertically spaced support floors for use by a warehouseman in servicing the tiers of opposed racks.
