Abstract

Abstract A heat insulating assembly for an enclosed space comprising a mat of fibers interlocked by thermosetting binder material at points of cross-over and bonded to heat reflecting foil. The previously fabricated laminated mat formed with hinging areas along selected portions thereof comprising fibers permanently locked assembled in greater density binder material polymerized to a greater degree than when the mat was first fabricated. The resulting mat product has a pronounced tendency to resume its original shape after being folded along its hinge axes. Accordingly, a properly tailored shell liner of this material tends to expand and retain its installed position against the interior walls of the shell. The material also provides an excellent heat insulating duct which can be used with or without a rigid duct.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim 220 words
In combination with a shell-like casing having a plurality of rectangular planar walls joined together at the parallel corners thereof, a one-piece plaque of heat insulating material sized to provide an interior lining for at least three contiguous ones of said planar walls, said insulation comprising a continuous onepiece thick layer of randomly arranged glass fibers initially connected together at points of crossover by thermosetting binder material to form a planar mat of uniform thickness and density, said planar plaque being divided into a plurality of panels corresponding in size to a respective one of said planar walls and connected together by inwardly facing V-shaped channels positioned closely parallel to the parallel corners of said casing and extending from edge to edge of said one-piece plaque, and the glass fibers of said V-shaped channels being permanently held interlocked together in more densely compressed condition by said binder material being more completely polymerized than the binder material in the less densely compacted areas of said planar layer and effective resiliently to resist folding said panels toward one anothEr about hinge axes medially of said Vshaped channels, whereby said strip of insulation, upon being folded and installed against the interior walls of said casing, tends to expand to hold the panels thereof pressed flush against the interior surfaces of said casing walls.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 220 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 32 words
The combination defined in claim 1 characterized in that said plaque of heat insulating material includes a foil layer laminated to the face of said plaque remote from the adjacent casing wall.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 43 words
The combination defined in claim 2 characterized in that said foil layer has a continuous impervious surface co-extensive in size with that of said plaque and providing an impervious smooth wall for the passage of fluids therepast upon being installed in said casing.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 73 words
The combination defined in claim 1 characterized in that areas of said plaque required to fit over a protruberance projecting partially into the space to be occupied by said plaque are held permanently more densely compressed than in other areas of said plaque by said binder material which is more completely polymerized than in adjacent areas of said plaque thereby avoiding the need to tailor the plaque during installation to accommodate the protruberance.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 46 words
The combination defined in claim 4 characterized in that the portion of said plaque permanently preformed to accommodate a protuberance is coated with a layer of polymerized thermosetting resinous material effective to hold the glass fibers compressed and providing the same with a tough protective layer.
