Abstract
Abstract A coaxial cable connector plug including cooperatively engageable members threadably connected together and having contacts which are cammed inwardly into gripping relation with respective outer and center contacts of a coaxial cable in response to relative movement of the members in a securing direction. The connector also provides for different camming actions at different engagement positions of the members for preventing damage from overtightening and for preventing unwanted turning of the coaxial cable during tightening. The connector is further constructed so as to prevent its internal elements from falling out when the members are fully disengaged.

Claim 1
Independent Claim
166 words
In a connector plug for use with a coaxial cable having a center conductor and an outer conductor, the combination of: first and second members constructed and arranged for cooperative engagement and relative movement, said members being of generally tubular form for receiving the cable, central contact means disposed within a member for electrically engaging the center conductor of the cable, outer contact means disposed within a member for electrically engaging the outer conductor of the cable, at least one of said contact means including contractible gripping means, and camming means coupled to at least one of said members and engageable with said gripping means to contract it and thereby to grip its respective conductor in response to relative movement of said members in a securing direction, said camming means including a part having tapered surfaces engaging with said gripping means, said surfaces being of relatively rapid taper in the area of initial engagement, and of relatively slight taper in an area reached upon further engagement.

Dependent Claim

Claim 3
Dependent Claim
48 words
The invention in accordance with claim 1, wherein said members have interengaging means limiting relative movement thereof in a securing direction, and wherein said camming surfaces are located so as to prevent damage from excessive camming action in the event overtightening occurs as a result of tolerance variations.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
191 words
In a connector for use with a coaxial cable, the cable having a center conductor, an outer conductor coaxial therewith and spaced therefrom by an insulating layer, and a fore end portion of the central conductor extending beyond the insulating layer and spaced away from the end of the outer conductor; the connector comprising first gripping means adapted to receive and grip the end portion of the outer conductor and a second gripping means adapted to receive and grip the center conductor of the cable, a single pair of relatively movable housing members screw threaded to each other, and means responsive to the relative axial tightening movement of said threaded housing members with respect to each other causing contraction of both said first and second gripping means on the exterior conductor and on the center conductor of the cable respectively, said first gripping means comprising a split ferrule, said ferrule having wedging surfaces of different inclination at opposite ends thereof, whereby axial closure movement of said housing members initially causes contraction of one end of said ferrule, and further axial closure movement causes contraction of the other end of said ferrule.
