Abstract SILVER HALIDE GRAINS, HAVING CERTAIN METHINE SENSITIZING DYES ADSORBED THERETO, ARE RENDERED SENSITIVE TO INFRARED RADIATION LONGER THAN ABOUT 2.0 MICRON BY COOLING THE GRAINS TO BELOW ABOUT -180*C., AND UNIFORMLY EXPOSING THE COOLED GRAINS TO RADIATION HAVING A WAVELENGTH FROM ABOUT 370 TO ABOUT 460 NM. TO PRODUCE A DEVELOPABLE LATENT IMAGE. AN IMAGEWISE INFRARED HERSCHEL EXPOSURE OF THE COOLED GRAINS CAUSES IMAGEWISE DESTRUCTION OF THE DEVELOPABLE LATENT IMAGE.
