Abstract A PROCESS FOR TREATING A MINERAL, E.G, ILMENITE, CONTAINING FEO GROUPS TOGETHER WITH A HEAVY-METAL OXIDE (E.G, TIO2) WHEREIN THE MINERAL IS SOBJECTED TO A REDUCTION STEP TO TRANSFORM THE IRON OXIDE TO METALLIC IRON WHICH IS THEN LEACHED. FROM THE LIXIVIANT, IRON OXIDES AND/ OR HYDROXIDES ARE PRECIPITATED. THE PRECIPITATE IS AGGLOMERATED, E.G. INTO BRIQUETTES WITH A BINDER, THE AGGLOMERATE BEING RECYCLED TO THE REDUCING STAGE TO PRODUCE SPONGE IRON. THE MINERAL, AFTER LEACHING, CONSISTS OF A RESIDUE OF THE HEAVY-METAL OXIDE OF HIGH PURITY.
