Abstract

Abstract A reinforced tire fabric comprising an elastomeric body portion in which a plurality of helically formed, single filament wires constitute the reinforcing. The helix delineated by each reinforcing wire has a relatively long lay and the diameter thereof is preferably no greater than three times the diameter of the wire itself. The wire filaments may be cold formed into their respective helices by being drawn through relatively rotatable orifice means-adjacent filaments preferably being of opposite hand-and encapsulated into a continuously extruded ribbon that is manipulated and appropriately severed to form the fabric. The ribbon may be wound into an annulus that is subsequently slit into a ply strip, or successive lengths of the ribbon may be joined into a ply strip. By either approach the bias of the reinforcing filaments in the finished tire may be preselected.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim 105 words
In a tire, at least one ply extending circumferentially of the tire, a tread portion circumscribing said tire radially outwardly of said ply, each said ply comprising, an elastomeric body, a plurality of wire reinforcing filaments in said body, each said filament delineating a cylindrical helix, the diameter of said helix being up to approximately three times the diameter of the filament forming said helix, the diameter of said helix and the lay thereof being dimensioned with respect to the diameter of the wire filament so as to provide no more than 7 percent elongation of the helix within the elastic limit of the wire.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 105 words
In a tire, at least one ply extending circumferentially of the tire, a tread portion circumscribing said tire radially outwardly of said ply, each said ply comprising, an elastomeric body, a plurality of wire reinforcing filaments in said body, each said filament delineating a cylindrical helix, the diameter of said helix being up to approximately three times the diameter of the filament forming said helix, the diameter of said helix and the lay thereof being dimensioned with respect to the diameter of the wire filament so as to provide no more than 7 percent elongation of the helix within the elastic limit of the wire.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 32 words
A tire, as set forth in claim 1, in which each said reinforcing filament is angularly oriented to at least 4* with respect to a frame of reference circumferentially of the tire.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 34 words
A tire, as set forth in claim 2, which employs at least two superimposed plies, the reinforcing filaments in successively superimposed plies being inclined to opposite sides of a common circumferential frame of reference.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 26 words
A tire, as set forth in claim 1, in which approximately one-half of said filaments delineate a helix of one hand and one-half of opposite hand.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 20 words
A tire, as set forth in claim 4, in which the successive filaments in each ply are of opposite hand.
