Abstract A PROCESS FOR THE TREATMENT OF LIGNIN, CONSISTING IN THE TREATMENT OF LIGNIN WITH SULFUR TRIOXIDE IN ORGANIC MEDIUM. THE PROCESS IS CARRIED OUT AT ROOM TEMPERATURE AND CAN BE ACCOMPLISHED WITHIN 15-20 MINUTES. A MODIFIED LIGNIN IS OBTAINED WHICH CONTAINS STRONG ACIDIC GROUPS IN THE MOLECULE AND IS WATER SOLUBLE.
