Abstract

Abstract A battery operated electric knife having an elongated housing defining the knife handle and enclosing an electric motor and battery unit. A pair of charging contacts are mounted entirely within the elongated housing with access openings thereto below the motor and a charging and storage stand are provided shaped to receive the knife handle in only one predetermined position whereby said housing for the electric knife may be resiliently clamped in assembled relationship with the charging unit. An improved permanent magnet rotor is employed having an outer field member comprising a resilient cylindrical shell with a slit therein.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 5
Claim 1
Independent Claim 177 words
The combination of a battery powered portable electric appliance and a charging and storage unit comprising an elongated housing of insulating material enclosing a battery unit and a motor electrically connected to said battery unit, means defining a pair of spaced openings in a wall of said housing beneath said motor to provide for the circulation or cooling air into said housing, a pair of charging contacts mounted entirely within said housing on one wall thereof with each of said contacts extending into a different one of said openings, a charging and storage stand having a recess formed therein shaped to receive said elongated housing partially nested therein in only one position, a pair of horizontally spaced vertically extending male charging terminals mounted at the bottom of said recess, said terminals being rectangular plate like members mounted in mutually parallel relationship, said terminals extending vertically through said pair of spaced openings in the wall of said housing into contacting engagement with said charging contacts when said elongated housing is nested in said recess in said one position.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 177 words

Claim 3
Dependent Claim 64 words
The combination of claim 1 wherein each said charging contact includes a mounting portion and a pair of closely spaced elongated resilient fingers extending from said mounting portion, integral projections on the interior of said wall of said housing adjacent each of said openings, said mounting portion of each said contact being formed to resiliently clamp into assembled relationship with one of said projections.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 21 words
The combination of claim 1 wherein said charging contacts are positioned entirely within the confines of the exterior of said housing.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 103 words
The combination of claim 1 wherein said motor is of the permanent magnet type comprising a pair of spaced end members formed of molded plastic material, a cylindrical permanent magnet field formed from a flat resilient member, an outer field comprising a resilient cylindrical shell having a slit extending axially therein, a pair of pole shoes supported in diametrically opposed relation on the inner surface of said permanent magnet, said spaced end members having cylindrical shoulders on which the ends of said pole shoes are supported, said shell being dimensioned to resiliently clamp said permanent magnet and pole shoes securely against said shoulders.
