Abstract
Abstract A MEANS AND METHOD FOR MODIFYING INSTANT COFFEE BY AGGLOMERATION TO FORM PARTICLES OF CONTROLLED INCREASED SIZE, DARKENED APPEARANCE, AND CONTROLLED BULK DENSITY. A FALLING STREAM OF INSTANT COFFEE IS SPRAYED WITH AN AQUEOUS FLUID AND IS ALLOWED TO DROP ONTO A MOVING LAYER OF DRY INSTANT COFFEE. THE COMBINED MOISTENED AND DRY COFFEE IS DRIED AT LOW TEMPERATURE. AGGLOMERATED PARTICLES ARE REMOVED BY SCREENING AND THE UNDERSIZE PAR- ICLES ARE RECYCLED. REGULATION OF THE MOVING LAYER VELOCITY CONTROLS AGGLOMERATE PARTICLE SIZE. ADJUSTMENT OF OTHER PARAMETERS CONTROLS BULK DENSITY.
