Abstract
Abstract A portable carriage adapted to be mounted on a tubular workpiece is used to perform cutting operations followed by in-place welding operations on such workpiece using two subassemblies interchangeably mounted on the carriage, one for cutting and one for welding. The carriage is rotatable around the stationary workpiece or may be held stationary while the workpiece rotates. After preliminary trimming, fusion welding is progressively accomplished in a circular path to join the abutting ends of the workpiece components.

Claim 1
Independent Claim
168 words
An apparatus for converting continuous rotational movement into reciprocating movement comprising: a drive shaft having a section fixed thereon, said section having cylindrical surface disposed so that the center of said surface is eccentric with the axis of rotation, a cylindrical element having a round hole disposed eccentrically therein, said hole being adapted to fit onto from one end and engage said cylindrical surface in journaled relationship, a keeper ring disposed on said section adjacent said element, said keeper ring being mounted to rotate with said section and to slide axially thereon, detent means disposed on said element and said keeper ring so that when said keeper ring and said elements are bearing against each other said element and said keeper ring rotate together, and resilient means for urging said keeper ring against said element to cause said detent means to engage and to allow said detent means to become disengaged when a torsional force above a given threshold is applied between said keeper ring and said element.
Claim 2
Independent Claim

Claim 3
Dependent Claim
38 words
The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said resilient means comprises: a disk portion mounted on one end of said section, and a resilient ring disposed between said keeper ring and said disk portion to urge the two apart.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
59 words
The apparatus of claim 2 wherein said detent means comprises: at least one radially extending lug formed on the end of said element, and a plurality of radially extending slots formed on said keeper ring so that said lug engages one of said slots when the keeper ring and element are urged against each other by said resilient ring.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
55 words
The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said detent means comprises: at least one radially extending lug formed on the end of said element, and a plurality of radially extending slots formed on said keeper ring so that said lug engages one of said slots when the keeper ring and element are urged against each other.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
55 words
The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said detent means comprises: a plurality of radially extending lugs formed on the end of said element, and at least one radially extending slot formed on said keeper ring so that said slot engages one of said lugs when the keeper ring and element are urged against each other.
