Abstract
Abstract An improvement in the nuclear orthoalkylation of aromatic amines by reaction of an aromatic amine having a hydrogen atom or a nuclear carbon atom ortho to an amino group (e.g., aniline) with an olefin and a catalytic amount of an alkyl aluminum halide whereby the catalyst is removed from the reaction mixture after completion of the alkylation by washing the reaction mixture with water. The water wash phase separates readily without the necessity of adding caustic.
