Abstract
Abstract In this system, waste-water, particularly refinery waste-water, is treated in a series of lagoons in which thrive microorganisms that feed on contaminants in the waste-water. The system is characterized by mobile aerator apparatus moving across the lagoons'' surfaces. These apparatus introduce air into the lagoons and churn surface water, and they have means which direct at least some of the churning surface water towards the lagoons'' bottoms. The underwater turbulence scours the lagoons'' bottoms and provides a way of controlling sludge deposits.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim
174 words
Apparatus to be used with a bioflotation water lagoon or the like, comprising: a pair of spaced pontoons which float on the lagoon''s surface; a shaft means having a plurality of blades bristling forth therefrom, said shaft means being rotatably mounted between the pontoons with the blades partially submerged in the lagoon; drive means which rotate the shaft means, causing the blades to beat air into the lagoon, churn the surface water, impart a velocity vector to the water, and move the apparatus over the lagoon; a pair of spaced baffle members connected between the pontoons but on opposite sides of the shaft means so that, as the apparatus moves, one baffle member leads the rotating blades and the other baffle member follows said blades; said baffle members extending downwardly into the water and towards the bottom of the lagoon so that some of the churning water is directed against the bottom of the lagoon to scour said bottom, said baffle members aiding in confining the churning, scouring water to the space between them.

Claim 3
Dependent Claim
17 words
Apparatus defined in claim 1 wherein one of the baffle members has a plurality of perforations therein.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
37 words
Apparatus defined in claim 2 wherein the upper portion of the trailing baffle member is movable, said portion upon being moved to different positions varying the amount of churning water directed towards the bottom of the lagoon.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
34 words
Apparatus defined in claim 1 wherein the upper portion of the leadiNg baffle member has an expanded opening therein which allows water to pass, and a plate portion adjacent the bottom of the lagoon.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
29 words
The apparatus defined in claim 4 additionally including means attached to said plate portion which drag along the bottom of the lagoon to scrape off the sludge adhering thereto.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
58 words
The combination comprising: pivot means in a bioflotation water lagoon or the like; and a plurality of apparatus in accordance with claim 14 interconnected side by side and coupled at one end to the pivot means, thereby churning water propels said interconnected apparatus so that they move over the lagoon along a circular course about the pivot means.
Claim 8
Independent Claim
176 words
A system for purifying contaminated waste-water comprising: a plurality of lagoons in which thrive aquatic microorganisms and through which the waste-water flows sequentially; and aerator apparatus in each lagoon which moves across the lagoons'' surfaces, introduces air into the lagoons'' surface water and churns said surface water, said aerator apparatus comprising a floating, rotary aerator which beats air into the surface of the lagoon and churns the surface water; first baffle means connected to the aerator which extends downwardly below the surface of the water and which directs at least some of the high velocity churning water toward the bottom of the lagoon so that the churning water scours said bottom to remove sludge therefrom and introduces air into the lower strata of the lagoon; and second baffle means connected to the aerator but spaced from the the first baffle means which also extends downwardly below the surface of the water and which aids in confining the churning water which scours the bottom of the lagoon to the space between said first and second baffle means.
