An aqueous pharmaceutical composition comprising a solution in water of from about 2 percent to about 8 percent by weight of at least one antibiotic compound selected from the group consisting of doxycycline and the pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts thereof, from about 10 percent to about 25 percent by weight of polyvinylpyrrolidone having an average molecular weight that is in the range of from about 10,000 to about 17,000, and a pharmaceutically acceptable magnesium compound soluble in said aqueous pharmaceutical composition selected from the group consisting of magnesium oxide, magnesium chloride and magnesium gluconate whereby the molar ratio of magnesium to doxycycline in the mixture is about 2:1, and sufficient water to total 100 percent, said composition having a pH value in the range of from about five to about eight.
