Abstract
Abstract The propensity of hydrocarbons to crack, during isomerization, is minimized by use of high pressure. This process is shown to be especially useful when isomerizing high molecular weight hydrocarbons, such as those found in the residues from petroleum and also highly branched hydrocarbons, both of which cannot be isomerized efficiently by use of prior art methods. In a preferred embodiment the hydrocarbon which is a slack wax is isomerized in a substantially inert solvent, at a pressure of at least 10,000 psi, and in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst to produce lubricants characterized by their high viscosity index and low pour point.
