Abstract A PROCESS FOR REMOVING MERCURY FROM AN ALKALINE SOLUTION HAVING A PH OF AT LEAST 7 IS PROVIDED COMPRISING INTERMIXING WITH SAID SOLUTION A SULFUR COMPOUND IN AN AMOUNT SUFFICIENT TO PROVIDE SULFIDE ION IN AN AMOUNT GREATER THAN THE STOICHIOMETRIC EQUIVALENT OF MERCURY, OXIDIZING THE SOLUBLE MERCURY POLYSULFIDE AND RECOVERING THE INSOLUBLE MERCURY SULFIDE.
