Abstract A BURNER HAVING A PULSATING MODE OF COMBUSTION AND WHICH CAN BE USED TO CARRY OUT FREE RADICAL REACTION COMPRISES (A) A COMBUSTION CHAMBER (PREFERABLY CYLINDRICAL WITH AN ACTUAL LENGTH OF AT LEAST TEN TIMES THE AVERAGE DIAMETER) WHICH HAS GROSSLY ROUGH WALLS, AND (B) AN OXYGEN/FUEL INLET SYSTEM WHICH HAS A LOW RESISTANCE TO GASEOUS FLOW. DURING USE THE CONTINUOUSLY FLOWING FUEL MIXTURE IS PERIODICALLY IGNITED. ONE COMBUSTION WAVE TRAVELS DOWNSTREAM UNTIL THE MIXTURE IS EXHAUSTED AND THE OTHER TRAVELS UP-STREAM UNTIL IT REACHES THE POINT AT WHICH THE FUEL AND OXYGEN INLET SYSTEMS SEPARATE.
