Abstract A REAR PROJECTION SCREEN IS DISCLOSED WHEREIN ORGANIC NEMATIC MESOMORPHIC COMPOUNDS, I.E., LIQUID CRYSTALS, ARE EMPLOYED. THE LIQUID CRYSTALS HAVE A THRESHOLD ELECTRIC FIELD WHICH WHEN EXCEEDED CAUSES THE LIQUID CRYSTALS TO SCATTER LIGHT. A THIN FILM OF THE LIQUID CRYSTAL IN THE LIGHT SCATTERING MODE CAN BE USED FOR A SCREEN IN A REAR PROJECTION SYSTEM.
