Automobile door lock

Claim 2

A lock comprising a latching member, detent means engageable with said member to hold the latter in an operative latching position, the detent means being releasable from said engagement to allow the latching member to move to an unlatching position, an operator to so release said detent means, and locking control means governing said release by said operator, said control means comprising a pivotally mounted control member having a transmitter pivoted thereon on an axis paralleling but laterally spaced from the pivotal axis of the control member, said transmitter being movable upon movement of said control member between an unlocked position in which said transmitter is operative in relation to the detent means to impart a releasing movement to the latter, and a locked position in which the transmitter is operative in relation to the detent means to impart a releasing movement to the latter, and a locked position in which the transmitter is incapable of imparting said releasing movement, said transmitter having a portion engageable by said operator when in said unlocked, motion-imparting position, thus to transmit movement from said operator through said transmitter portion to the detent means, said control member having means to pivotally move thE same and said transmitter to and from said imparting position, said control member also having means affording said laterally spaced pivotal axis of the transmitter, and a kick-off and preset member carried by said control member for movement thereon between different positions relative to the control member in which it differently controls the imparting of said releasing movement by said transmitter.

Claim 3

A lock for application to an automobile or like door, comprising a latching member, a detent engageable with said member to hold the latter in an operative latching position, the detent being releasable from said engagement to allow the latching member to move to an unlatching position, first and second operators actuable respectively , when the lock is applied to said door, from the exterior and interior of the door to so release said detent, and locking control means governing said release by said operators, said control means comprising a medially pivoted control member having a transmitter pivotally mounted thereon on an axis paralleling but laterally spaced from the pivotal axis of the control member, said transmitter being movable upon pivoting of said control member between an unlocked position in which said transmitter is operatively engageable with the detent to impart a releasing movement to the latter, and a locked position in which the transmitter is incapable of imparting said releasing movement, said transmitter having a portion engageable by either of said first and second operators when in said unlocked, motion-imparting position, thus to transmit movement from one of said operators through said transmitter portion to the detent, said medially pivoted control member having means to move the same and said transmitter to and from said imparting position under actuation by said inside or outside actuated operator, said control member also having means affording said laterally spaced pivotal axis of the transmitter, and a kick-off and preset member carried by said control member for movement thereon between different positions in which it differently controls the imparting of said releasing movement by said transmitter.

Claim 4

A lock for application to an automobile or like door, comprising a latching member, a detent engageable with said member to hold the latter in an operative latching position, the detent being releasable from said engagement to allow the latching member to move to an unlatching position, first and second operators actuable respectively , when the lock is applied to said door, from the exterior and interior of the door to so release said detent, and locking control means governing said release by said operators, said control means comprising a medially pivoted control member having a transmitter pivotally mounted thereon on an axis paralleling but laterally spaced from the pivotal axis of the control member, said transmitter being movable upon pivoting of said control member between an unlocked position in which said transmitter is operatively engageable with the detent to impart a releasing movement to the latter, and a locked position in which the transmitter is incapable of imparting said releasing movement, said transmitter having a portion engageable by either of said first and second operators when in said unlocked, motion-imparting position, thus to transmit movement from one of said operators through said transmitter portion to the detent, said medially pivoted control member having means to move the same and said transmitter to and from said imparting position under actuation by said inside or outside actuated operator, said control member also having means affording said laterally spaced pivotal axis of the transmitter, and a kick-off and preset member carried by said control member for movement thereon between different positions in which it differently controls the imparting of said releasing movement by said transmitter.

Claim 5

The lock of claim 2, in which said first and second operators move in parallel planes to operate said transmitter in the motion transmitting position of the latter.

Claim 6

The lock of claim 3, in which said first and second operators are pivoted on a common axis to move in said parallel planes, said control member moving in a plane normal to said planes.

Claim 7

A lock comprising a latching member, detent means engageable with said member to hold the latter in an operative latching position, the detent means being releasable from said engagement to allow the latching member to move to an unlatching position, an operator to so release said detent means, and locking control means governing said release by said operator, said control means comprising a pivotally mounted control member having a transmitter pivoted thereon on an axis paralleling but laterally spaced from the pivotal axis of the control member, said transmitter being movable upon movement of said control member between an unlocked position in which said transmitter is operative in relation to the detent means to impart a releasing movement to the latter, and a locked position in which the transmitter is incapable of imparting said releasing movement, said transmitter having a portion engageable by said operator when in said unlocked, motion-imparting position, thus to transmit movement from said operator through said transmitter portion to the detent means, said control member having means to pivotally move the same and said transmitter to and from said imparting position, said control member also having means affording said laterally spaced pivotal axis of the transmitter, and a kick-off and preset member carried by said control member for movement thereon between different positions in which it differently controls the imparting of said releasing movement by said transmitter, Said different positions of said kick-off and preset member on said control member being first and second positions relative to the latter, in said first of which positions, with said latching member out of said latching position and said control member in said locked position, said kick-off and preset member is engaged and moved by said detent means as the latching member goes to latching position and thus moves said detent means, the kick-off and preset member in so moving being effective to shift said control member to its unlocking position, said kick-off and preset member when in said second position thereof failing of engagement and movement by said detent means as the latching member goes to latching position, whereby said control member remains in its locking position.

Claim 8

A lock comprising a latching member, detent means engageable with said member to hold the latter in an operative latching position, the detent means being releasable from said engagement to allow the latching member to move to an unlatching position, an operator to so release said detent means, and locking control means governing said release by said operator, said control means comprising a pivotally mounted control member having a transmitter pivoted thereon on an axis paralleling but laterally spaced from the pivotal axis of the control member, said transmitter being movable upon movement of said control member between an unlocked position in which said transmitter is operative in relation to the detent means to impart a releasing movement to the latter, and a locked position in which the transmitter is incapable of imparting said releasing movement, said transmitter having a portion engageable by said operator when in said unlocked, motion-imparting position, thus to transmit movement from said operator through said transmitter portion to the detent means, said control member having means to pivotally move the same and said transmitter to and from said imparting position, said control member also having means affording said laterally spaced pivotal axis of the transmitter, and a kick-off and preset member carried by said control member for movement thereon between different positions in which it differently controls the imparting of said releasing movement by said transmitter, Said different positions of said kick-off and preset member on said control member being first and second positions relative to the latter, in said first of which positions, with said latching member out of said latching position and said control member in said locked position, said kick-off and preset member is engaged and moved by said detent means as the latching member goes to latching position and thus moves said detent means, the kick-off and preset member in so moving being effective to shift said control member to its unlocking position, said kick-off and preset member when in said second position thereof failing of engagement and movement by said detent means as the latching member goes to latching position, whereby said control member remains in its locking position.

Claim 9

A lock for application to an automobile or like door, comprising a latching member, a detent engageable with said member to hold the latter in an operative latching position, the detent being releasable from said engagement to allow the latching member to move to an unlatching position, first and second operators actuable respectively, when the lock is applied to said door, to so release said detent, and locking control means governing said release by said operators, said control means comprising a medially pivoted control member having a transmitter pivotally mounted thereon and movable upon pivoting of said control member between an unlocked position in which said transmitter is operatively engageable with the detent to impart a releasing movement to the latter, and a locked position in which the transmitter is incapable of imparting said releasing movement, said transmitter having a portion engageable by either of said first and second operators when in said unlocked, motion-imparting position, thus to transmit movement from one of said operators through said transmitter portion to the detent, said medially pivoted control member having means to move the same and said transmitter to and from said imparting position under actuation by said inside or outside actuated operator, and a kick-off and preset member mounted for movement on said control member between first and second positions relative to the latter, in said first of which positions, with said latching member out of said latching position and said control member in said locked position, said kick-off and preset member is engaged and moved by said detent means as the latching member goes to latching position and thus moves said detent means, the kick-off and reset member in so moving being effective to shift said control member to its unlocking position, said kick-off and preset member when in said second position thereof failing of engagement and movement by said detent means as the latching member goes to latching position, whereby said control member remains in its locking position.

Claim 10

A lock for application to an automobile or like door, comprising a latching member, a detent engageable with said member to hold the latter in an operative latching position, the detent being releasable from said engagement to allow the latching member to move to an unlatching position, first and second operators actuable respectively, when the lock is applied to said door, to so release said detent, and locking control means governing said release by said operators, said control means comprising a medially pivoted control member having a transmitter pivotally mounted thereon and movable upon pivoting of said control member between an unlocked position in which said transmitter is operatively engageable with the detent to impart a releasing movement to the latter, and a locked position in which the transmitter is incapable of imparting said releasing movement, said transmitter having a portion engageable by either of said first and second operators when in said unlocked, motion-imparting position, thus to transmit movement from one of said operators through said transmitter portion to the detent, said medially pivoted control member having means to move the same and said transmitter to and from said imparting position under actuation by said inside or outside actuated operator, and a kick-off and preset member mounted for movement on said control member between first and second positions relative to the latter, in said first of which positions, with said latching member out of said latching position and said control member in said locked position, said kick-off and preset member is engaged and moved by said detent means as the latching member goes to latching position and thus moves said detent means, the kick-off and reset member in so moving being effective to shift said control member to its unlocking position, said kick-off and preset member when in said second position thereof failing of engagement and movement by said detent means as the latching member goes to latching position, whereby said control member remains in its locking position.

Claim 11

The lock of claim 4, and further comprising a kick-off and preset member mounted for movement on said control member between first and second positions relative to the latter, in said first of which positions, with said latching member out of said latching position and said control member in said locked position, said kick-off and preset member is engaged and moved by said detent means as the latching member goes to latching position and thus moves said detent means, the kick-off and reset member in so moving being effective to shift said control member to its unlocking position, said kick-off and preset member when in said second position thereof failing of engagement and movement by said detent means as the latching member goes to latching position, whereby said control member remains in its locking position.

Claim 12

A lock comprising a latching member, detent means engageable with said member to hold the latter in an operative latching position, the detent means being releasable from said engagement to allow the latching member to move to an unlatching position, an operator to so release said detent means, and locking control means governing said release by said operator, said control means comprising a pivotally mounted control member having a transmitter pivoted thereon and movable upon movement of said control member between an unlocked position in which said transmitter is operative in relation to the detent means to impart a releasing movement to the latter, and a locked position in which the transmitter is incapable of imparting said releasing movement, said transmitter having a portion engageable by said operator when in said unlocked, motion-imparting position, thus to transmit movement from said operator through said transmitter portion to the detent means, said control member having means to pivotally move the same and said transmitter to and from said imparting position, and a kick-off and preset member mounted for movement on said control member between first and second positions relative to the latter, said kick-off and preset member being bodily slidable on and relative to said control member, said kick-off and preset member, when in said first of said positions, with said latching member out of said latching position and said control member in said locked position, being engaged and moved by said detent means as the latching member goes to latching position and thus moves said detent means, the kick-off and preset member in so moving being effective to shift said control member to its unlocking position, said kick-off and preset member when in said second position thereof failing of engagement and movement by said detent means as the latching member goes to latching position, whereby said control member remains in its locking position.

Claim 13

A lock comprising a latching member, detent means engageable with said member to hold the latter in an operative latching position, the detent means being releasable from said engagement to allow the latching member to move to an unlatching position, an operator to so release said detent means, and locking control means governing said release by said operator, said control means comprising a pivotally mounted control member having a transmitter pivoted thereon and movable upon movement of said control member between an unlocked position in which said transmitter is operative in relation to the detent means to impart a releasing movement to the latter, and a locked position in which the transmitter is incapable of imparting said releasing movement, said transmitter having a portion engageable by said operator when in said unlocked, motion-imparting position, thus to transmit movement from said operator through said transmitter portion to the detent means, said control member having means to pivotally move the same and said transmitter to and from said imparting position, and a kick-off and preset member mounted for movement on said control member between first and second positions relative to the latter, said kick-off and preset member being bodily slidable on and relative to said control member, said kick-off and preset member, when in said first of said positions, with said latching member out of said latching position and said control member in said locked position, being engaged and moved by said detent means as the latching member goes to latching position and thus moves said detent means, the kick-off and preset member in so moving being effective to shift said control member to its unlocking position, said kick-off and preset member when in said second position thereof failing of engagement and movement by said detent means as the latching member goes to latching position, whereby said control member remains in its locking position.

Claim 14

The lock of claim 6, in which said kick-off and preset member is said control member bodily slidable on and relative to said control member, and is movable to said second position relative to the latter by one of said operators.

Claim 15

The lock of claim 7, in which said kick-off and preset member is bodily slidable on and relative to said control member, and is movable to said second position relative to the latter by either of said operators.

Claim 16

A lock comprising a latching member, detent means engageable with said member to hold the latter in an operative latching position, the detent means being releasable from said engagement to allow the latching member to move to an unlatching position, an operator to so release said detent means, and locking control means governing said release by said operator, said control means comprising a pivotally mounted control member having a transmitter pivoted thereon and movable upon movement of said control member between an unlocked position in which said transmitter is operative in relation to the detent means to impart a releasing movement to the latter, and a locked position in which the transmitter is incapable of imparting said releasing movement, said transmitter having a portion engageable by said operator when in said unlocked, motion-imparting position, thus to transmit movement from said operator through said transmitter portion to the detent means, said control member having means to pivotally move the same and said transmitter to and from said imparting position, and a further operator pivoted on a common axis with said first named operator to act similarly to the latter in relation to the transmitter.

Claim 17

A lock comprising a latching member, detent means engageable with said member to hold the latter in an operative latching position, the detent means being releasable from said engagement to allow the latching member to move to an unlatching position, an operator to so release said detent means, and locking control means governing said release by said operator, said control means comprising a pivotally mounted control member having a transmitter pivoted thereon and movable upon movement of said control member between an unlocked position in which said transmitter is operative in relation to the detent means to impart a releasing movement to the latter, and a locked position in which the transmitter is incapable of imparting said releasing movement, said transmitter having a portion engageable by said operator when in said unlocked, motion-imparting position, thus to transmit movement from said operator through said transmitter portion to the detent means, said control member having means to pivotally move the same and said transmitter to and from said imparting position, and a further operator pivoted on a common axis with said first named operator to act similarly to the latter in relation to the transmitter.

Claim 18

A lock comprising a detent member releasably engageable with a latching member to hold the latter in an operative latching position, said detent member being moved by said latching member as the latter moves from an unlatching position to said latching position, an operator to release said detent member from said holding engagement with the latching member, and locking control means governing said release of the detent member by said operator, said control means comprising a locking member movable between unlocked and locked positions, and means actuable by said operator and operatively connected to said locking and detent members to occasion said release of the latter upon actuation of the operator when thE locking member is in its unlocked position, and to prevent said release when the locking member is in its locked position, and a kick-off and preset member having a slidable mount on said locking member for bodily movement thereon between first and second positions relative to the latter, said kick-off and preset member in said first position being engaged and moved by said detent member in the movement of the latter as said latching member goes to said latching position, the movable mount of the kick-off and preset member on said locking member being such as to shift the latter to its unlocking position from its locking position when the kick-off and reset member is so moved by the detent member, said kick-off and preset member, when in its said second position thereof relative to said locking member being so related to said detent member as not to be moved by the latter when the latching member goes to latching position, whereby said locking member remains in its locking position as the lock becomes latched.

Claim 19

A lock comprising a detent member releasably engageable with a latching member to hold the latter in an operative latching position, said detent member being moved by said latching member as the latter moves from an unlatching position to said latching position, an operator to release said detent member from said holding engagement with the latching member, and locking control means governing said release of the detent member by said operator, said control means comprising a locking member movable between unlocked and locked positions, and means actuable by said operator and operatively connected to said locking and detent members to occasion said release of the latter upon actuation of the operator when thE locking member is in its unlocked position, and to prevent said release when the locking member is in its locked position, and a kick-off and preset member having a slidable mount on said locking member for bodily movement thereon between first and second positions relative to the latter, said kick-off and preset member in said first position being engaged and moved by said detent member in the movement of the latter as said latching member goes to said latching position, the movable mount of the kick-off and preset member on said locking member being such as to shift the latter to its unlocking position from its locking position when the kick-off and reset member is so moved by the detent member, said kick-off and preset member, when in its said second position thereof relative to said locking member being so related to said detent member as not to be moved by the latter when the latching member goes to latching position, whereby said locking member remains in its locking position as the lock becomes latched.

Claim 20

A lock comprising a detent member releasably engageable with a latching member to hold the latter in an operative latching position, said detent member being moved by said latching member as the latter moves from an unlatching position to said latching position, an operator to release said detent member from said holding engagement with the latching member, and locking control means governing said release of the detent member by said operator said control means comprising a locking member movable between unlocked and locked positions, and means actuable by said operator and operatively connected to said locking and detent members to occasion said release of the latter upon actuation of the operator when the locking member is in its unlocked position, and to prevent said release when the locking member is in its locked position, said last named means comprising a transmitter pivotally mounted on said locking member on an axis paralleling but laterally spaced from that of the locking member for movement with the latter between an unlocked position in which said transmitter is operative in relation to the detent member to impart a releasing movement to the latter, and a locked position in which the transmitter is incapable of imparting said releasing movement, said transmitter having a portion engageable by said operator when in said unlocked, motion-imparting position to transmit movement from said operator through said transmitter portion to said detent member, and a kick-off and preset member having a mount on said locking member for movement between first and second positions relative to the latter, said kick-off and preset member in said first position being engaged and moved by said detent member in the movement of the latter as said latching member goes to said latching position, the movable mount of the kick-off and preset member on said locking member being such as to shift the latter to its unlocking position from its locking position when the kick-off and reset member is so moved by the detent member, said kick-off and preset member when in its said second position thereof relative to said locking member being so related to said detent member as not to be moved by the latter when the latching member goes to latching position, whereby said locking member remains in its locking position as the lock becomes latched.

Claim 21

A lock comprising a detent member releasably engageable with a latching member to hold the latter in an operative latching position, said detent member being moved by said latching member as the latter moves from an unlatching position to said latching position, an operator to release said detent member from said holding engagement with the latching member, and locking control means governing said release of the detent member by said operator said control means comprising a locking member movable between unlocked and locked positions, and means actuable by said operator and operatively connected to said locking and detent members to occasion said release of the latter upon actuation of the operator when the locking member is in its unlocked position, and to prevent said release when the locking member is in its locked position, said last named means comprising a transmitter pivotally mounted on said locking member on an axis paralleling but laterally spaced from that of the locking member for movement with the latter between an unlocked position in which said transmitter is operative in relation to the detent member to impart a releasing movement to the latter, and a locked position in which the transmitter is incapable of imparting said releasing movement, said transmitter having a portion engageable by said operator when in said unlocked, motion-imparting position to transmit movement from said operator through said transmitter portion to said detent member, and a kick-off and preset member having a mount on said locking member for movement between first and second positions relative to the latter, said kick-off and preset member in said first position being engaged and moved by said detent member in the movement of the latter as said latching member goes to said latching position, the movable mount of the kick-off and preset member on said locking member being such as to shift the latter to its unlocking position from its locking position when the kick-off and reset member is so moved by the detent member, said kick-off and preset member when in its said second position thereof relative to said locking member being so related to said detent member as not to be moved by the latter when the latching member goes to latching position, whereby said locking member remains in its locking position as the lock becomes latched.

Claim 22

A lock comprising a detent member releasably engageable with a latching member to hold the latter in an operative latching position, said detent member being moved by said latching member as the latter moves from an unlatching position to said latching position, an operator to release said detent member from said holding engagement with the latching member, and locking control means governing said release of the detent member by said operator, said control means comprising a locking member movable between unlocked and locked positions, and means actuable by said operator and operatively connected to said locking and detent members to occasion Said release of the latter upon actuation of the operator when the locking member is in its unlocked position, and to prevent said release when the locking member is in its locked position, and a kick-off and preset member having a mount on said locking member for movement between first and second positions relative to the latter, said kick-off and preset member in said first position being engaged and moved by said detent member in the movement of the latter as said latching member goes to said latching position, the movable mount of the kick-off and preset member on said locking member being such as to shift the latter to its unlocking position from its locking position when the kick-off and reset member is so moved by the detent member, said kick-off and preset member, when in its said second position thereof relative to said locking member, being so related to said detent member as not to be moved by the latter when the latching member goes to latching position, whereby said locking member remains in its locking position as the lock becomes latched, the movement of said kick-off and preset member being a bodily sliding one on said locking member between said first and second positions.

Claim 23

A lock comprising a detent member releasably engageable with a latching member to hold the latter in an operative latching position, said detent member being moved by said latching member as the latter moves from an unlatching position to said latching position, an operator to release said detent member from said holding engagement with the latching member, and locking control means governing said release of the detent member by said operator, said control means comprising a locking member movable between unlocked and locked positions, and means actuable by said operator and operatively connected to said locking and detent members to occasion Said release of the latter upon actuation of the operator when the locking member is in its unlocked position, and to prevent said release when the locking member is in its locked position, and a kick-off and preset member having a mount on said locking member for movement between first and second positions relative to the latter, said kick-off and preset member in said first position being engaged and moved by said detent member in the movement of the latter as said latching member goes to said latching position, the movable mount of the kick-off and preset member on said locking member being such as to shift the latter to its unlocking position from its locking position when the kick-off and reset member is so moved by the detent member, said kick-off and preset member, when in its said second position thereof relative to said locking member, being so related to said detent member as not to be moved by the latter when the latching member goes to latching position, whereby said locking member remains in its locking position as the lock becomes latched, the movement of said kick-off and preset member being a bodily sliding one on said locking member between said first and second positions.

Claim 24

A lock comprising a detent member releasably engageable with a latching member to hold the latter in an operative latching position, said detent member being moved by said latching member as the latter moves from an unlatching position to said latching position, an operator to release said detent member from said holding engagement with the latching member, and locking control means governing said release of the detent member by said operator said control means comprising a locking member movable between unlocked and locked positions, and means actuable by said operator and operatively connected to said locking and detent members to occasion said release of the latter upon actuation of the operator when the locking member is in its unlocked position, and to prevent said release when the locking member is in its locked position, said last named means comprising a transmitter mounted on said locking member for movement therewith between an unlocked position in which said transmitter is operative in relation to the detent member to impart a releasing movement to the latter, and a locked position in which the transmitter is incapable of imparting said releasing movement, said transmitter having a portion engageable by said operator when in said unlocked, motion-imparting position to transmit movement from said operator through said transmitter portion to said detent member, and a kick-off and preset member having a mount on said locking member for movement between first and second positions relative to the latter, said kick-off and preset member in said first position being engaged and moved by said detent member in the movement of the latter as said latching member goes to said latching position, the movable mount of the kick-off and preset member on said locking member being such as to shift the latter to its unlocking position from its locking position when the kick-off and reset member is so moved by the detent member, said kick-off and preset member, when in its said second position thereof relative to said locking member, being so related to said detent member as not to be moved by the latter when the latching member goes to latching position, whereby said locking member remains in its locking position as the lock becomes latched, the movement of said kick-off and preset member being a bodily sliding one on said locking member between said first and second positions.

Claim 25

A lock comprising a detent member releasably engageable with a latching member to hold the latter in an operative latching position, said detent member being moved by said latching member as the latter moves from an unlatching position to said latching position, an operator to release said detent member from said holding engagement with the latching member, and locking control means governing said release of the detent member by said operator said control means comprising a locking member movable between unlocked and locked positions, and means actuable by said operator and operatively connected to said locking and detent members to occasion said release of the latter upon actuation of the operator when the locking member is in its unlocked position, and to prevent said release when the locking member is in its locked position, said last named means comprising a transmitter mounted on said locking member for movement therewith between an unlocked position in which said transmitter is operative in relation to the detent member to impart a releasing movement to the latter, and a locked position in which the transmitter is incapable of imparting said releasing movement, said transmitter having a portion engageable by said operator when in said unlocked, motion-imparting position to transmit movement from said operator through said transmitter portion to said detent member, and a kick-off and preset member having a mount on said locking member for movement between first and second positions relative to the latter, said kick-off and preset member in said first position being engaged and moved by said detent member in the movement of the latter as said latching member goes to said latching position, the movable mount of the kick-off and preset member on said locking member being such as to shift the latter to its unlocking position from its locking position when the kick-off and reset member is so moved by the detent member, said kick-off and preset member, when in its said second position thereof relative to said locking member, being so related to said detent member as not to be moved by the latter when the latching member goes to latching position, whereby said locking member remains in its locking position as the lock becomes latched, the movement of said kick-off and preset member being a bodily sliding one on said locking member between said first and second positions.

The lock of claim 12, in which said kick-off and preset member is moved at least in part by said operator from said first to said second position of said member.

The lock of claim 13, in which said kick-off and preset member is moved at least in part by said operator from said first to said second position of said member.

The lock of claim 14, in which said kick-off and preset member is moved at lEast in part by said operator from said first to said second position of said member.

A lock comprising a detent member releasably engageable with a latching member to hold the latter in an operative latching position, said detent member being moved by said latching member as the latter moves from an unlatching position to said latching position, an operator to release said detent member from said holding engagement with the latching member, and locking control means governing said release of the detent member by said operator said control means comprising a locking member movable between unlocked and locked positions, and means actuable by said operator and operatively connected to said locking and detent members to occasion said release of the latter upon actuation of the operator when the locking member is in its unlocked position, and to prevent said release when the locking member is in its locked position, said last named means comprising a transmitter mounted on said locking member for movement therewith between an unlocked position in which said transmitter is operative in relation to the detent member to impart a releasing movement to the latter, and a locked position in which the transmitter is incapable of imparting said releasing movement, said transmitter having a portion engageable by said operator when in said unlocked, motion-imparting position to transmit movement from said operator through said transmitter portion to said detent member, and a kick-off and preset member having a mount on said locking member for movement between first and second positions relative to the latter, said kick-off and preset member in said first position being engaged and moved by said detent member in the movement of the latter as said latching member goes to said latching position, the movable mount of the kick-off and preset member on said locking member being such as to shift the latter to its unlocking position from its locking position when the kick-off and reset member is so moved by the detent member, said kick-off and preset member, when in its said second position thereof relative to said locking member, being so related to said detent member as not to be moved by the latter when the latching member goes to latching position, whereby said locking member remains in its locking position as the lock becomes latched, said transmitter being pivotally mounted on said locking member for movement by the latter between locking and unlocking positions, the transmitter having a portion engageable with said kick-off and preset member, upon actuation of the transmitter by said operator, to move the transmitter to said second position.

Claim 31

A lock comprising a detent member releasably engageable with a latching member to hold the latter in an operative latching position, said detent member being moved by said latching member as the latter moves from an unlatching position to said latching position, an operator to release said detent member from said holding engagement with the latching member, and locking control means governing said release of the detent member by said operator said control means comprising a locking member movable between unlocked and locked positions, and means actuable by said operator and operatively connected to said locking and detent members to occasion said release of the latter upon actuation of the operator when the locking member is in its unlocked position, and to prevent said release when the locking member is in its locked position, said last named means comprising a transmitter mounted on said locking member for movement therewith between an unlocked position in which said transmitter is operative in relation to the detent member to impart a releasing movement to the latter, and a locked position in which the transmitter is incapable of imparting said releasing movement, said transmitter having a portion engageable by said operator when in said unlocked, motion-imparting position to transmit movement from said operator through said transmitter portion to said detent member, and a kick-off and preset member having a mount on said locking member for movement between first and second positions relative to the latter, said kick-off and preset member in said first position being engaged and moved by said detent member in the movement of the latter as said latching member goes to said latching position, the movable mount of the kick-off and preset member on said locking member being such as to shift the latter to its unlocking position from its locking position when the kick-off and reset member is so moved by the detent member, said kick-off and preset member, when in its said second position thereof relative to said locking member, being so related to said detent member as not to be moved by the latter when the latching member goes to latching position, whereby said locking member remains in its locking position as the lock becomes latched, said transmitter being pivotally mounted on said locking member for movement by the latter between locking and unlocking positions, the transmitter having a portion engageable with said kick-off and preset member, upon actuation of the transmitter by said operator, to move the transmitter to said second position.

The lock of claim 15, in which said transmitter is pivotally mounted on said locking member for movement by the latter between locking and unlocking positions, the transmitter having a portion engageable with said kick-off and preset member, upon actuation of the transmitter by said operator, to move the transmitter to said second position.

A lock comprising a detent member releasably engageable with a latching member to hold the latter in an operative latching position, said detent member being moved by said latching member as the latter moves from an unlatching position to said latching position, an operator to release said detent member from said holding engagement with the latching member, and locking control means governing said release of the detent member by said operator said control means comprising a locking member movable between unlocked and locked positions, and means actuable by said operator and operatively connected to said locking and detent members to occasion said release of the latter upon actuation of the operator when the locking member is in its unlocked position, and to prevent said release when the locking member is in its locked position, and a kicK-off and preset member having a mount on said locking member for movement between first and second positions relative to the latter, said kick-off and preset member in said first position being engaged and moved by said detent member in the movement of the latter as said latching member goes to said latching position, the movable mount of the kick-off and preset member on said locking member being such as to shift the latter to its unlocking position from its locking position when the kick-off and reset member is so moved by the detent member, said kick-off and preset member, when in its said second position thereof relative to said locking member, being so related to said detent member as not to be moved by the latter when the latching member goes to latching position, whereby said locking member remains in its locking position as the lock becomes latched, said kick-off and preset member being moved at least in part by said operator from said first to said second position of said member, said transmitter being pivotally mounted on said locking member for movement by the latter between locking and unlocking positions, the transmitter having a portion engageable with said kick-off and preset member, upon actuation of the transmitter by said operator, to move the transmitter to said second position.

A lock comprising a detent member releasably engageable with a latching member to hold the latter in an operative latching position, said detent member being moved by said latching member as the latter moves from an unlatching position to said latching position, an operator to release said detent member from said holding engagement with the latching member, and locking control means governing said release of the detent member by said operator said control means comprising a locking member movable between unlocked and locked positions, and means actuable by said operator and operatively connected to said locking and detent members to occasion said release of the latter upon actuation of the operator when the locking member is in its unlocked position, and to prevent said release when the locking member is in its locked position, and a kicK-off and preset member having a mount on said locking member for movement between first and second positions relative to the latter, said kick-off and preset member in said first position being engaged and moved by said detent member in the movement of the latter as said latching member goes to said latching position, the movable mount of the kick-off and preset member on said locking member being such as to shift the latter to its unlocking position from its locking position when the kick-off and reset member is so moved by the detent member, said kick-off and preset member, when in its said second position thereof relative to said locking member, being so related to said detent member as not to be moved by the latter when the latching member goes to latching position, whereby said locking member remains in its locking position as the lock becomes latched, said kick-off and preset member being moved at least in part by said operator from said first to said second position of said member, said transmitter being pivotally mounted on said locking member for movement by the latter between locking and unlocking positions, the transmitter having a portion engageable with said kick-off and preset member, upon actuation of the transmitter by said operator, to move the transmitter to said second position.
