Abstract
Abstract Lignin derivatives, particularly for use in oil base drilling muds, are obtained by reacting an oxidized lignin with an amine to form a salt and heating the resulting salt to elevated temperatures until a substantial portion of the product is converted to a nitrogen containing product wherein the nitrogen is stable in an aqueous alkaline medium at room temperature.
