Claim 1
Independent Claim
204 words
A sealing device for a can having a top panel, and an opening through said top panel, said sealing device comprising a cover member, means to retain said cover member on the rim of the can from movement in direction with respect to said rim, a lever pivotally mounted to said cover member, and a latch means pivotally mounted to said lever at a point spaced from the pivotal mounting between said cover and said lever, said latch means having means thereon to engage the rim of said can at a position spaced from said means to retain said cover member on said rim, the pivot point of said lever to said cover member, and the pivot of said lever to said latch means going over center with respect to the effective engagement of saId latch means to the rim of the can whereby said latch means and cover member create a force against the rim of said can and said cover member is locked to said can, said cover member including means to engage the surfaces of said can top panel adjacent the edges of the opening in said top panel to resiliently seal around said opening when said lever goes over center.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
45 words
The combination as specified in claim 1 wherein said latch means comprises a member having a hook at one end thereof adapted to go over the outside of the rim of said can, and bifurcated legs pivotally mounted to said lever at the opposite end.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
35 words
The combination as specified in claim 1 wherein said means to engage the surfaces of said can top adjacent the edges of the opening in said can comprises a pad of resilient plastic foam material.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
39 words
The combination as specified in claim 2 wherein said means to retain said cover member on said rim comprises a hook portion adapted to fit over said rim substantially diametrically opposed from said hook portion of said latch means.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
49 words
The combination as specified in claim 3 wherein said latch means is under tensile stress when the lever is in over center position, and bears down on said cover member to urge said resilient material against the top panel of said can when said lever means goes over center.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
30 words
The combination as specified in claim 5 wherein said lever is of length to extend outwardly beyond the periphery of said can when it is in its over center position.
