A process for preparing a flexible self-supporting laminate useful for packaging materials, comprising: a. placing the first surface of a sheet of mineral filler material haviNg a first surface, a second surface, and a thickness of about 0.1-3 mils, said mineral filler material being selected from the group of minerals consisting of vermiculite, mica, talc, and clay having an axial ratio of about 20-300:1, said mineral filler having been modified by a process comprising contacting an aqueous dispersion of said mineral with a member selected from the group consisting of: (i) an aqueous solution of ions selected from the group consisting of lithium ions, aluminum ions, and ions of an element having an atomic number of 21-32, 39-51, or 57-83; and (ii) an aqueous solution or an aqueous suspension of at least one organic quaternary ammonium compound having the formula
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
138 words
A process for preparing a flexible self-supporting laminate useful for packaging materials, comprising: a. placing the first surface of a sheet of modified mineral filler material having a first surface and a second surface, a thickness of about 0.1-3 mils, and being selected from the group of minerals consisting of vermiculite, mica, talc, and clay having an axial ratio of about 20-300:1, said mineral filler having been modified by a process comprising contacting an aqueous dispersion of said mineral with a member selected from the group consisting of: (i) an aqueous solution of ions selected from the group consisting of lithium ions, aluminum ions, and ions of an element having an atomic number of 21-32, 39-51, or 57-83; and (ii) an aqueous solution or an aqueous suspension of at least one organic quaternary ammonium compound having the formula

Dependent Claim
132 words
A process for preparing a self-supporting flexible laminate useful for packaging materials, comprising: a. applying at least one coating of a dispersion of a mineral filler material, said dispersion containing about 0.1-10 percent of a mineral filler material selected from the group consisting of vermiculite, mica, talc, and clay having an axial ratio of about 20-300:1, said mineral filler having been modified by a process comprising contacting an aqueous dispersion of said mineral with a member selected from the group consisting of: (i) an aqueous solution of ions selected from the group consisting of lithium ions, aluminum ions, and ions of an element having an atomic number of 21-32, 39-51, or 57-83; and (ii) an aqueous solution or an aqueous suspension of at least one organic quaternary ammonium compound having the formula
