Abstract JUXTAPOSED THERMOPLASTIC MEMBERS ABUTTING ALONG A COMMON INTERFACE SURFACE ARE JOINED BY CONTACTING BOTH MEMBERS WITH A SONICALLY OR ULTRASONICALLY VIBRATING HORN HAVING TOOTH-LIKE PROTRUSIONS AT ITS OUTPUT END. THE PROTRUSIONS ARE CAUSED TO PENETRATE THROUGH THE SURFACE OF EACH MEMBER AND, RESPONSIVE TO THE DISSIPATION OF ENERGY, CAUSE SOFTENED MATERIAL WHICH IS URGED TO FLOW ACROSS THE INTERFACE SURFACE TO PROVIDE, UPON HARDENING, A JOINT.
