Abstract

Abstract An apparatus and method for heating water to generate steam or provide hot water. The water is heated by a conventional heat source and is simulataneously subjected to an electric field. In a steam generator the field is produced by an electrode in the steam chamber. In a water heater the field is produced by immersing an electrode in the water.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim 53 words
A water heater comprising a water storage reservoir, a combustion chamber, a fuel burner in said chamber for burning fuel and forming a hot gas, a heat exchanger for transferring heat from the hot gas to the water in said reservoit, and means insulated from the water for applying an electric field thereto.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 53 words
A water heater comprising a water storage reservoir, a combustion chamber, a fuel burner in said chamber for burning fuel and forming a hot gas, a heat exchanger for transferring heat from the hot gas to the water in said reservoit, and means insulated from the water for applying an electric field thereto.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 50 words
A heater as defined in claim 1 wherein said means for applying an electric field comprises an electrode positioned above the surface of the water in the reservoir, means for energizing said electrode and the water in the reservoir by connection to a respective opposite potentials of an electric source.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 28 words
A heater as defined in claim 2 wherein the means for energizing the electrode comprises a transformer and means connecting the electrode in circuit with the secondary winding.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 34 words
A heater as defined in claim 3 wherein the transformer is energized to energize the electrode with a voltage in the range of 2-30KV and with a frequency in the range of 50-7,000 Hz.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 43 words
A heater as defined in claim 3 wherein the means positioning the electrode comprises a housing secured to the reservoir, a resilient pad having an opening therethrough mounted in the housing, the electrode extending through said opening, and means for compressing the pad.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 37 words
A heater as defined in claim 1 wherein said means for applying an electric field comprises an insulated electrode positioned in the water, means for energizing said electrode and the water in the reservoir with opposite potentials.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 29 words
A heater as defined in claim 6 wherein the electrode and water are energized with a voltage on the range of 2-30KV and with a frequency of 50-7,000 Hz.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 37 words
A heater as defined in claim 2 wherein the electrode comprises a glass tube, a pool of mercury in the bottom of the tube, a wire dipping into the pool, and an insulating cover on the wire.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 36 words
A heater as defined in claim 2 wherein the electrode comprises a flat spiral and a lead wire connected to one end of the spiral, the spiral and lead wire being coated with an insulating material.
Claim 11
Independent Claim 41 words
A method for heating water comprising the steps of applying heat to the water and simultaneously subjecting at least a portion of the volume of the water to an electric field without direct connection thereof to the source of the field.
Claim 12
Independent Claim 41 words
A method for heating water comprising the steps of applying heat to the water and simultaneously subjecting at least a portion of the volume of the water to an electric field without direct connection thereof to the source of the field.
